Comments about Mountain Hardwear Splitter Pack:
This is a well made bag. I was looking for a sack that would consume a vast amount of climbing gear and still have room for other necessities (food, water, extra-clothing, etc), yet still be confortable. The backpack truly astounded me at how well thought out the features were, the multiple compartments for organizing equipment is barnone one of the shining features. This was big plus for me.
The bag easily carries two ropes, a full rack, and any extras you'd want to put into it. I wouldn't concider this a light bag, but it is bullet proof and will last for years.
I removed a star because the hipbelt is sewn into the bag, hence preventing removal. I loved the bag when it arrived (had to mail order it) but took one look at the hipbelt and returned it unused. I generally do not use hipbelts on my daysacks/crag bags unless I'm negotiating spicy terrain.
Note this is purely personal preference.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Splitter Pack:
This is a great pack for hauling your gear into a climb, or spending a day at the beach. The M/L size is easily big enough for a weekend in the woods or a 4 day about town if you aren't into carrying 100 little extras with you. It hasn't failed me in 6 months and it seems like it's going to last quite a while. The buckle on the waistbelt may be a lttle bit small for some people, but I don't mind since it uses 2 nylon straps to engage the padded portion of the hipbelt. MH has a lifetime warranty they stand behind as well.(In my experience.)
For the information of other potential end users, I would like to point out that the descriptionof the splitter 38 on this site makes a few claims that are not accurate. In observation, they seem to be about a different bag:
5th bullet down: "Mountain Hardwear Splitter pack's framesheet, hipbelt and top lid are easily removed, letting you adapt the pack to your specific activity" -The framesheet and hipbelt are fixed. Top lid? It doesn't have a top lid... You can see that in the picture. You can remove and reshape the aluminum spine behind the framesheet, but this pack isn't a modular.
8th bullet down: "Body and bottom fabrics are coated with polyurethane for moisture resistance; bottom fabric features a Durable Water Repellent finish for added protection." -This may be true, but there's nothing on the MH website, or in the flyer that came with the bag that makes this claim. Given the nature of some of the other items in the description, I have to think this one is suspect.
11th bullet down: Zippered hydration pouch is readily accessible from the top of the pack for refilling your reservoir (hydration reservoir sold separately)-There is no hydration reservoir pocket, zippered or otherwise. It has big burly water bottle pockets and they're made out of ballistic nylon, not that mesh stuff that doesn't last.
In closing, look at the picture, you get what you see; a tough day/weekend bag with room for all your gear that's built for hard use without being overly heavy itself.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Splitter Pack:
Love this bag. I get oohs and aahs everywhere I go because of how much it rules! Everything a place and a place for everything. If you buy any other bag for your climbing gear then you suck as a person and should have your rights stripped from you. Just sayin.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Splitter Pack:
I was using a multi day pack to get my rack, rope and gear for my wife and I to the rock, while she carried the water food and first aid, when at the rock we just dumped it all out and went from there... the 38 saves your gear and rope from hitting the dirt and lays it out real nice and quick to get to, no more dumping your bag out on the ground to get the quick draws at the bottom! the gear loops at the top make it nice and easy to get to, the removable rope tarp makes it nice to be able to move the rope and not the bag, the compartments for the shoes and other gear keep everything clean and organized... it was a dream come true... best part, its easy to carry, VERY nice shoulder straps, and hip pads, very adjustable. a 5 to 10 mile hike with this pack is no problem! Very stable, so hopping up class 4 climbs is not hard at all.
Construction, this is a solid solid solid!!! pack, stitching and material is bomb proof!
I use this pack to go to and from the rock, it fits two harnesses, two pair of shoes, a 60m 11mm rope, full rack, and a little space for some food and drink. I could see my self using this for a airplane ride because of all the pockets, would make travel easy even with out rock gear in it!
If you want a good solid easy to use pack, this is it! could even serve as a 2 day back packing pack!!!... its big, but not huge ;)
good luck, stay safe and have a hell of a time :D
