Comments about Mountain Hardwear Hueco 34 Pack:
Me: I'm looking for a bomber daypack, I need to stick sharp rocks in it
REI Associate: You mean, like for training?
Me: no, I just like to stick sharp rocks in my pack
REI guy: funny look
Yea I'm a rockhound. I need a bomber pack that I can stick rocks in. I've gone through wimpier packs and this one looks like it will do the trick.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Hueco 34 Pack:
Don't be fooled as this pack will not fit your rope (60m), shoes (size 45), harness and hardware (14 draws, ATC, GriGri and Slings) all in the same bag. it is a well thought out bag, just to small and it definately won't fit your bladder for long approaches either.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Hueco 34 Pack:
Needed a pack primarily for working a world cup men's downhill race course, and versatile enough for skiing, hiking, traveling, etc. I won't use it for back country skiing, so having specific stuff hold my skis on the pack was not a consideration. Here's what I loved most about the pack:
Built well – all the zippers, straps, materials are solid and durable. I'm not worried about having to baby this pack. I've only had it a week (of heavy use), so I can't attest to how well it will hold up, but feel confident in its durability.
Comfortable – even loaded down, the shoulder straps were perfect, the pack kept its shape and never felt bulky as I was skiing around the course. The shoulder straps twisted sometimes when putting the pack on over my parka, but the straps are thick and easy to flip around with my gloves on.
Perfect size – holds my Camel bladder perfectly, plenty of room for food, extra layers, extra gloves, day hikers (to get out of my ski boots asap), small tools/first aid, etc.
Handles, Daisy Chain, Straps – they are all well thought out, simple, effective. I really like the extra handle in the daisy chain – I grab that as much as the one at the top. No annoying fancy stuff you really aren't sure how to use that SOOO many other packs had. I like the minimal waist strap. Since I rarely use it, I just keep it clipped/synched and it's like its not even there (but it is there if I ever want to use it). Many packs this size started having waist straps as big and bulky as a car bumper.
Compartments – I like how the zippered compartments open from the "back", so you end up laying the pack down in the crud on the front and keeping the parts that touch your shoulders/back up and dry. I like the 2 side pouches on the inside of the main compartment. It makes it easy to find smaller items. If you don't need them, they don't waste any space, and the main compartment is plenty big (I was able to stuff my parka in there when it was already quite full. The glasses/goggles pouch is perfect – great size/location and nice soft material.
Downsides:
I could only think of 2 things that could improve the pack (and they are very minor to me):
– Internal gear loops – It would be great to clip/hang something on the inside of the pack. I ended up clipping lots of stuff to the water bladder holder loop.
– Helmet strap – while it does work (which was more than I could say of other packs I looked at), it is a bit annoying to get it to work well. You need to take anything from that pouch and throw it in the main compartment, then spend a bit of time figuring out which way the helmet best fits. I did prefer using it as opposed to just clipping the helmet to the outside of the pack. The helmet is better protected, and doesn't smack into other people standing by me on the crowded bus at the end of the day.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Hueco 34 Pack:
The bag is comfortable. It's easy to adjust for smaller loads. I found it had plenty of pockets and what-not. I'm also a fan of the daisy chain.
It's good for fair weather day hikes and I also use it to carry my stuff to work via bus.
This bag would have high marks except for one thing. The breathable padding on the straps and back absorb sweat terribly and takes days to fully dry out once saturated. I sweat quite a bit when hiking especially since I'm pushing to do steeper and more difficult hikes and peaks. The last one was on an overcast day and despite the cool day my shirt and the pack were soaked. After I changed my shirt, the new just got wet from the pack.
If you don't sweat much, this bag will be great. Otherwise, get something else.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Hueco 34 Pack:
I'm trying to use this backpack for everything including hiking, city cycling/commuting, travel, and school/work. The pack is very comfortable b/c of the hardened foam backing (no items poke through), distribution of weight over wide shoulder straps and top and bottom compartments. These features have made it useful for hiking and biking. I can fit additional layers and a dslr camera for the mountains, or my u-lock, cable lock, bottle of wine and a six pack for riding around the city. Also, this is a great bag for a taking on the plane and bringing two days worth of clothes and your laptop. The Hueco 34 is stylish and full of room and mini stowaway compartments.
The top loader style really maximizes space. The shoulder straps have room to clip a watch or something to which offers more ways to personalize the pack to specific uses. In the large section there is a laptop slip which is functional and fits my 15inch laptop well. Lastly, the rubberized plastic material that makes up the majority of this bag is great. It looks great, and is abrasive and water proof.
There are two negative features that I found with this pack. First, the light weight mesh used on the inside of the straps is quick to fall apart/degrade. I haven't lost any functionality b/c of this, however, the bag loses its clean new look within a couple weeks. Second, the zippers on the top compartment have been a big hassle. The zippers constantly catch on the inseem unless you keep the fabric very taught; which I fear will add up wear and tear fast and it's just annoying.
*Note: I don't use this bag for climbing which was the marketed intention.
