Comments about Big Agnes Encampment +15 Sleeping Bag:
I work year-round as a hydrographer collecting data in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. I bought this bag to furnish my survival bag in case I get caught and have to spend a night in the back country. I've never been caught so I didn't use it the first two years I owned it. I finally got a chance to put it though it's paces on a motorcycle camping trip through Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon. It rained every day and the temps ran down to the low 40's at night. Now, I'm used to cold. I work part time as a ski instructor and love to ski storms in nothing more than a vest, shell jacket and spring gloves. However, I have never spent as cold a night as I did with this bag. I was in a tent and used the inflatable pad that is designed to work with the bag. By night three I finally decided to just sleep wearing my one-piece waterproof riding suit and sitting by the fire in the rain as that was warmer than in the tent with this bag. [...] I only used it 3 nights, but I did buy it over 2 years ago too. I'll never use this bag again in anything less than +45 degree temps. REI ought to quit selling this. A Coleman $19 bag from[...] would work better.

Comments about Big Agnes Encampment +15 Sleeping Bag:
I am 6' and 200 lbs. I like to move around in my bag and absolutely cannot sleep in a mummy bag. After 3 months of use and just hitting 32 degrees on last outing, I love it. Have the correct size pad and no problems rolling around inside this thing. Have been recomending it to everyone that sleeps like I do.(Side, Stomach, Back, Side, Etc.)

Comments about Big Agnes Encampment +15 Sleeping Bag:
I went on the North Fork trail near Seneca Rocks, which is a 3 to 5 day trip depending on your speed and how many pictures you wanna take. The trip ranged in weather combinations. It rained, hailed, sleeted, and snowed. It would be windy one day and then calm the next.
This sleeping bag did not keep me warm at all without a little engineering. I had to warm up the bag with a hot bottle of water. Once you take the water bottle out thought the bag gets cold again.
I never fell off of my pad. The pad insert works really well. Big Agnes has that feature on every bag and it works amazingly well.
Nemo makes a similar thing that attaches to the floor of the tent and keeps your pad in place, so if you want this feature without having to buy a cold sleeping bag just get a Nemo tent.
The sleeping bag did get wet and dried really quickly.
YOU HAVE TO BUY A SLEEPING PAD! If you don't then you will be extremely cold and basically be sleeping on the cold ground.
It does pack pretty small in a compression sack.
O and on a side note. We used REI's HOODOO 2 tent and it is worth every penny. It was on clearence and super cheap. It held up great and was really easy to put up even in the rain, sleet, and snow.
I will be returning this bag.

Comments about Big Agnes Encampment +15 Sleeping Bag:
The bag is very roomy. I am a big guy 250+ and this bag is very comfy. I like this bag but would not consider it a 15 degree bag. It is really designed to be used with the big Agnes inflatable pad if you want max temp rating. The problem is that the bag is built for big guys with respect to roominess but the inflatable pad cannot handle the psi us big guys generate. I had to swith to a Thermarester after the Big Agnes pad blew about 30 tiny holes in it. Impossible to patch. I still carry the bag and enjoy it as a 30 degree bag because the trail lite pad does not fit it well and allows air to move through on the sides. I would recommend it because there is not a lot of choices for big guys out there. There is a lot of room for improvement in this market niche though.

Comments about Big Agnes Encampment +15 Sleeping Bag:
After searching for a reasonable priced sleeping bag that was also comfortable and light I landed on and decided on this one. And I do not regret my choice. The complaints that I have read are not really valid in my opinion, as, who sleeps naked in the woods? The bag was warm, so warm that I ended up sweating a little in the middle of the night in temps of 39 and 38 for a 2 night back packing trip recently. I was wearing thermal underwear, a pair of hiking socks (not the heavy kind)and a white hanes t-shirt, like i said, who sleeps naked in the woods? the added feature of the sleep pad being a part of the bag was awesome, the zipper does snag a little easy, a bit of a design flaw, the hood when cinched makes it really cozy, the bag packs down small and light. all and all no real complaints. :-)

Comments about Big Agnes Encampment +15 Sleeping Bag:
Very roomy bag, but the downside is that it is not warm enough. Used during the summer in the Andes, where night temperatures were about 40 degrees F. I am a cold sleeper to start with, hence I brought a 15 degree bag. Spent a few nights freezing with a beanie and long underwear on. If you are a wide figured person that can fill it up, I'm sure it would perform better. For me, I chose to return it.

Comments about Big Agnes Encampment +15 Sleeping Bag:
I bought this with the odd backpacking trip and generally car camping in mind. My first camping trip with it was in January at Turner Falls, OK where it got down to just above freezing every night. I froze my butt off! The first night I tried long johns, hat, thick socks, and hot water bottle in the end. The second and third nights I slept with jeans, three layers, hat, water bottle, and thick socks, and I was somewhat less cold but certainly not warm. The only time I was warm was testing it in the backyard when there was a low of 50F (love those Dallas winters). I am a cold sleeper so I allow some leeway in the temperature ratings but that was taking it too far. As I was certain that I would at some point be camping or hiking in much colder temperature than that, I had to return it.
That being said, they may be onto something with this sleeping bag design. I bought a Big Agnes insulated air core sleeping pad, which fit right into the sleeve and worked beautifully. I won't be returning that. The bag is big for all 6'4 250lbs of me which was nice, and combined with the thick sleeping pad I was able to roll around and sleep on my side. However, the size of it may be a double edged sword- There is no way to keep the huge foot box warm and there is just generally a ton of real estate that you are tasked with heating up. It's like they say, your sleeping bag doesn't warm you up, you warm it up. The zippered side had a baffle running along side it but the unzippered side did not and I feel that is where a significant amount of heat escaped and cold entered. I wanted so badly to like this bag- perhaps if I invest in a Big Agnes down bag I may be warmer, but I sort of doubt it due to the sheer size of the bag.

Comments about Big Agnes Encampment +15 Sleeping Bag:
I spent two cold nights after getting this bag and it wasn't even down to 32 degrees since we had no frost. I began to wonder if this was a 15 degree centigrade bag. I had the new Q matress which was comfortable, but I was so cold it didn't matter. I don't think any of these bags with the "missing" insulation on the bottom work as expected. I like the system, but the result was two miserable nights of camping.

Comments about Big Agnes Encampment +15 Sleeping Bag:
I've used this bag with the Big Agnes insulated air core pad and I can not get comfortable at all. My coldest trip has been 32 degrees, my warmest was 40 degrees. Each time I had to put on my microlight jacket, heavy weight thermal pants, heavy weight socks and a warm hat. I've tried to give this bag a fair chance, but enough is enough. I'm looking for a new bag.

Comments about Big Agnes Encampment +15 Sleeping Bag:
I love the Big Agnes idea of the integrated sleeping pad. Never again will I roll off my pad onto the cold ground and get woke up in the middle of the night.
You do have to buy a pad, and at least with this bag, you pretty much have to buy a Big Agnes pad. The good news is that their pad is awesome too.
As a plus, having no built in insulation on the bottom of the bag saves some size and weight. I plan to take this backpacking and be sleeping in comfort.
I've been in weather down to +30 in an REI Camp Dome 2 and this bag. The one negative thing I can say about it, is that unless I was fully dressed in the same amount of clothing I was wearing while active outside in that temperature, I was cold in the bag at +30. Once appropriately dressed, it was great though. I think part of the issue may be that there is so much room in the bag, that your body has to heat all that space up. I guess I'll sacrifice a little on warmth of the bag for room to wiggle around.
All around this is a great bag, and a really great idea by Big Agnes.
