Comments about Deuter Kid Comfort I Child Carrier:
I bought the KCI at REI in summer of 2011 when my daughter was about 5 months old. We bought it as a scratch and dent, so we didn't try other ones. I had heard from other parents that Deuter was the way to go. We both found it comfortable (I'm 5'5" and my hsuband is 5'11"), my daughter liked it, it was on super sale -- it seemed like a no-brainer.
We didn't use it much until she was taller, and really sitting up well. I've mostly done short hikes with her (up to 3 miles or so, about an hour or two). Usually hikes around our local ski hill, which involves steep terrain. I've also used it for walks around town.
You definitely want to adjust the torso length. I must not have used it much last year, because this year my shoulders were killing me until I shortened up the torso length. (I think my husband always carried her before, but then he hurt his shoulder (unrelated to child carrying), so I am the one carrying her now.)
I have three complaints about the Deuter:
1) Sunshade (an optional accessory) only really works midday, as it doesn't come down very far on the sides. I still use sunscreen and a hat on her. We live in the high desert so we have a lot of sun and it's strong.
2) Sleep comfort is less than optimal. Last summer, we had to cut a number of hikes short as my daughter would not or could not fall asleep in the pack (she was about 18 months old). I remember she would want to fall asleep but just couldn't find somewhere to put her head. I ended up using a soft pack (like a Mei Tai or Ergo-type carrier) if we went out at naptime.
This year, she will fall asleep in it, but she tends to wake up early from her head flopping around. And on the trail, if it's at all rough or variable, it makes it hard too, as they flop around even more. So I'm a bit disappointed as I would love for her to take a nice long nap so I can get a good hike in. I'm considering upgrading to a fancier Deuter or the Osprey for this reason as I want to start going out on longer hikes. I do wonder if I could rig up something with a neck pillow as well. But the other features of the fancier packs appeal to me now as well (ability to hold a water bladder, more storage.)
BTW, the first fall/winter I used it, she actually slept pretty well in it (around 10-11 months). She might have been lower in the pack or something, where she could rest her head better. I'm not sure.
3) Gear storage is minimal. If you are hiking solo, it can be hard to fit everything you need. I find I can stuff in a one liter water bottle, diaper changing materials, snacks, and maybe a lightweight shell for myself, and jacket for my daughter. And at that point it's hard to zip shut. I use the side mesh pockets to hold my daughter's sippy cup and snack cup.
Pros:
1) The Deuter overall is a comfortable, well-constructed pack.
2) There is a five point harness to hold them in. One winter, my daughter was fast asleep (she slept well in it around 12 months old), I was snowshowing down our local ski area when I fell the way I really wanted to avoid falling -- straight downhill head first. (This was on ungroomed powder snow fortunately). So my head was downhill, I was laying on my stomach. I was prepared for a screaming unhappy baby, but amazingly, she stayed asleep the whole time. The harness held her in securely.
3) Lightweight. I'm finding it convenient to carry along while my daughter "hikes". This way she can get a ride when she gets tired, plus we can bring along a few items with us (whereas if I carry a soft pack carrier, I also would need a backpack in order to carry anything else, and then there is the issue of carrying kid on your pack, and lugging a backpack -- can't wear them both on your back). I find the sunshade tends to hit me in the head if I leave it unclipped, so I try to reattach it fully when she is not in it to avoid teaching her new words. (I have to undo it to take her out of the pack.)
4) Good view. They have a high perch in the carrier.
Bottom line: It works really well when my daughter is awake, not so well when she sleeps, now that she is a toddler. I would look at the fancier Deuter models and also the Osprey before buying the KCI, if you want to do extended hikes.

Comments about Deuter Kid Comfort I Child Carrier:
We we're given a KCI at our baby shower, and it has been our favorite present. Our daughter is almost 2 now, and she's been riding in the KCI since about 6 mo. old when she developed head control. She loves it - it's padded, allows her to look forward and out at the world even at a vey young age, is easy to fall asleep in, has a great sun shade, and is easy to adjust as baby grows. The child harness component is totally bomber, but easy to snap together.
The pack is lightweight and very comfortable to wear - such a great upgrade from bjorn type slings that killed our backs. The pack adjusts easily for either parent with a velcro strap -it takes 10 seconds to switch from Mom to Dad size. The sun shade is removable and the KCI packs well in smaller cars, buses etc.
For storage there's a big main compartment, and mesh on either side of the child. There isn't a ton of storage for long, all day hikes but there is just enough space for the child's gear. The pack is best at shorter trips or trips with both parents carrying packs.
Our daughter isn't a big fan of sitting still or her car seat, but loves riding in the KCI; we've used it as a go-to sleep inducer. Even when she was little, other hikers/fishermen would comment on how happy she seemed riding in the KCI. It's a great pack that will be super comfortable for child and parent; it's sturdy with a big kickstand, durable, and will get you outside!

Comments about Deuter Kid Comfort I Child Carrier:
This thing is great- they boy loves it so much he will happily sit in it for hours without complaint. I use it at horse trials, grocery shopping, even when I am holding horses for the farrier. I don't know what I did before I bought it! My only complaint is that the boy has a hard time sleeping in it- his head wants to rest on the front and with the bouncing from walking he keeps getting woken up. Otherwise it is worth every penny!

Comments about Deuter Kid Comfort I Child Carrier:
We just purchased this product and I wore it around the store with my son in it. He was very comfortable in it and I felt very stable with him on my back. In fact, one of the REI employees said to me while my child was on my back, "wow he really digs that, doesn't he?" If you are used to hoisting a backpack onto your shoulders the proper way, this is a safe pack for you and your child. The shoulder straps are adequate and comfortable. The hip belt distributes the weight well, but I will caution that it does not fully distribute the weight as much as a properly fitted backpack would. I think it is because they are dealing with a unisex model and if you have bigger hips it might not fully distribute to your body frame.
The other con I would mention is that the hip belt does not have a storage area, this is on the more expensive model. I see my toddler loving this carrier, but if he were an infant there is less here to pack them in and be comfortable.
This is a great product and I can't wait to take it out on the trails with my son and family. It will be great.

Comments about Deuter Kid Comfort I Child Carrier:
Don't get me wrong, this is a really nice pack, much better design than the Kelty. For short hikes and quick errands with the kid, this pack is awesome. The only "small" issues I had were the hip buckle came undone a couple of times and my shoulder would get sore on long hikes. I returned it and upgraded to the Kid Comfort 2 with my 20% off coupon and dividend, which almost made it a straight trade. I was surprised that the 2 is so much better. Better padding for better comfort, buckle design is better and more secure, more storage pockets, the 2 just feels and works a lot better. If you can afford it, get the 2.
