Comments about Light My Fire FireSteel Scout 2.0 Fire Starter:
the Light My Fire 2.0 FireSteel is definitely and improvement. It may look like the same fire steel with fancy handles but it isn't. It strikes much easier and more effectively than the previous models, giving a good shower of sparks every time. Also the whistle is unobtrusive and doesn't get in the way. Its not even noticeable until you need it. The whistle is no fox 40 but it gets the job done and is still better than a fair amount of whistles out there, so its decent, not just a gimmick. This product is a definite step up for Light My Fire. Their firesteel was already a fantastic item that I recommended to any one but now its even better. I have bought two of them already and I love them.

Tried this thing out and the first thing you notice about it is the striker. It is fail-safe with a large indentation for your thumb which will always keep the striker's blade up in the right position to draw sparks off the firesteel. This striker also has a built-in whistle, which may not sound as loud, but it still carries for a ways in the wilderness. It makes a good back-up emergency whistle.
The firesteel itself has a good size handle to hold onto which could be important if you are wearing gloves. Tried it on two types of tinder in one day: It lit up petroleum jelly-soaked cotton balls easily; then threw sparks onto char cloth which when blown on against a cedar bark tinder bundle set it ablaze easily.
So, the improved striker/whistle and better firesteel handle are the only differences between this product and the original Scout.

Comments about Light My Fire FireSteel Scout 2.0 Fire Starter:
Most of the other reviews here seem to compare the old model with this one. I do not have the old one, so I can't compare. I have used the type with the magnesium block.
For me, this is heavy. I like to keep things light and simple. The Rod is great. Easily throws lots of sparks. For those not too familiar with starting a fire, you most likely will find this product difficult to use(with a little practice its a piece of cake.). It just provides a spark, no flame. So you must set up things for a proper fire, ie cotton ball, good tinder, small twigs, etc.
That said I like this simple tool. In most cases I will still use a BIC lighter. My biggest complaint is what most others liked - the new striker. The thumb grips are nice, but the whistle is on the back and digs into my fingers. This can be painful after throwing a few sparks, more so when it is colder. If it is very cold this is not an issue as you can use it with gloves. Which is a plus over a BIC in my opinion. The cord also can be removed by messing with the little plastic piece that both ends of the cord go into. This is nice if you would like to use the cord for something, or place a different style, shape, color, length cord on it. The same could be done with another type of striker(like the one I use in place of this one) via a knot. The addition of a whistle bugs me. I already have one on my pack, and on my compass; do I really need another one? If it did not effect the performance of the product it would not bug me as much, but it does, which to me it a step backward. I have since bought the Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel Mini. It is cheaper, lighter, more compact, and throws sparks just as well. That makes it a better choice to me, I'll be returning this one.
Hope that helps, happy hiking!

Comments about Light My Fire FireSteel Scout 2.0 Fire Starter:
I love the new design of the 2.0 because of the safety whistle integrated into it. It is loud and effective. I do carry fox 40 whistles with all of my gear set ups, but it is nice to have an extra whistle already built into the firesteel. The new striker works good and throws some mean sparks just like the old striker, personally not much difference in that area. The only negative about the new design is it's bulkiness. It takes up twice as much space and weighs twice as much as the old one (Due to the new striker handle). I am not big on counting ounces but for someone who is, this is a negative feature of the 2.0, thus one less star.

I use this to light my alcohol stove. This firestarter produces so many sparks that lighting my stove is a piece of cake. It's a bit on the heavy and bulky side though. A small BIC is cheaper and lighter, but not as reliable.

Works, eventually. Needs good conditions. Not so good for wet/humid conditions. I suggest some magnesium shavings for poor conditions. Not so easy to "throw" the spark. Emergency whistle is a joke!

So glad I tried this in the backyard. Tried dry grass, leaves, bark my thumb was getting sore. Read a review suggesting cotton balls. One ball, one strike. FANTASTIC!!!!!

Comments about Light My Fire FireSteel Scout 2.0 Fire Starter:
This firesteel will throw reliable and very large sparks. It is long enough to set against your tinder and strike, or aim. The provided striker is not well made, and will dull before the rod has been used completely. However, it can be easily replaced with a bit of hacksaw blade. I prefer to simply use the back of my knife. After making it through about half of the rod, it broke on me while I was striking it. I was very disappointed, though I did have matches as a backup. On the plus side, the provided handle is very large and comfortable to hold.
