Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
I view the Bitterroot boot as Vasques' acknowledgement that they have had quality problems since moving their boot manufacturing to China - these appear to be the Wasatch model after an attempt to fix several problems. I've worn Vasque boots for decades because they fit me well, but I've returned three consecutive pairs of Chinese-made Vasque boots because the outsoles split, came unglued or both. My Bitterroots are a Customer Service replacement.
They are much wider than any previous pair of Vasque boots. I had to return a medium width (which I've always worn) for narrow pair, which are plenty wide.
Materials seem slightly higher quality that the failure prone Wasatch model, with the exception of the Vibram outsole, which is vastly better and has stayed attached for at least the first 150 or so miles.
Traction and support seem good, at least in the Sierra Nevada (rocky, lots of residual snow, not much mud or wet logs). The top two lace hooks are very close together, which complicates lacing the boots in the dark, but also makes it easy to cinch up the upper, so it's easy to lock the heel in place.
I'd give these a five rating except for the excess width (one other reviewer commented on width problems too), and – get ready – a portion of the rubber toe shield is coming unglued. I'd recommend these to a friend with a tube of glue.

Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
These things are awesome!! Tough, burly, and heavy duty are all adjectives aptly applied. They are also amazingly comfortable (after the break-in period - which for me was about 4 days). I'm looking forward to taking these to the top of many of Colorado's 14ers.I have a weak right ankle, and was looking for a boot that would give me proper support. I've got a goal to get to the top of no fewer than 10 14ers this year, but at the same time, I didn't want to break the bank. In, the Bitterroot (at [$] at REI), I think I've found it.

Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
I was in the market for a new pair of boots, I'm a previous owner of Vasque Clarion II GTX and loved those to death, so despite the change in manufacturing I decided to give these a shot. They fit great, traveled with me overseas for business and day hiking, and were wearing well.
Looked like they we're going to turn out just fine. However, the first time I took them out for some more vigorous hiking/bouldering the top of the right boot split from the sole. I could fit a finger in the split when the boot was flexed, came right apart. It was a disappointment, but I'm just glad I wasn't out on the trail backpacking.
Didn't take the replacement pair, all the warnings I had heard about poor manufacturing were unfortunately spot on. Liked the feel, horrible durability.

Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
This is a quality boot for the serious outdoor enthusiast! It is tough to break in, taking me a week of solid use to get to break in. This boot has held up well to a spring and summer of backpacking in the Cascade Range of Oregon, Sawtooths and Bitterroots of Idaho. It has handled the harsh and wet terrain thrown at them, and has shown little wear to them. They are heavy, adding extra weight and a more tired feeling on long hikes, but I will take that over soar feet and a bum ankle from a lesser boot.

Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
I went to REI looking to replace my 10 yr old Sundowners , after reading reviews I was sure I was going to switch brands because of the quality issues of these boots being made in China. After trying these and others, I felt they fit my foot best and went ahead and purchased them.
After an initial break in period of about 50 miles, I did a 7 day hike of the Gallitan Skyline Trail in Yellowstone with a 45lb. pack, through various weather conditions and they performed outstandingly. No sore spots or hot spots much less a blister. They have good uphill and downhill traction and are extremely stable under heavy loads. I have had no issues with manufacturing quality and am very pleased with my purchase.

Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
I think that this is a great boot and very well made. With that said, I have always bought a 13 Medium width and this boot was way too small in the toe box area. This resulted in massive blisters on my toes where I have never had them and a blacken toe nail caused by hammering my toes into the end of the boot coming down from San Jacinto Mt. (12 miles). I bought these on line (my mistake) make sure you try them on for fit in the store before buying them. I guess the China factory problems on sizing is a new issue??

Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
I needed boots for multi-day backpacking. These were very comfortable for me and required very little break-in. I am a big guy and carry 30-50 pounds and I really like a stiff sole, so I don't feel rock points through the bottom. These were good for me. I would buy them again.

Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Men's:
One width never fits all. Be very cautious about buying or incorrect width could leave even the best trekker with sore and possibly damaged feet. And the boots will sit in one's closet, and not on the mountain peaks as they should.

These things are a robust!! Tough, burly, and heavy duty. But, They are very stiff (needs long break-in period). I was looking for a boot that would give me proper support and comfortable one. But these are not for me. I gave up for break-in after first try and returned. It is a well made product.
