Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Women's:
I bought these for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro because I needed a pair of durable and comfortable hiking boots that I could rely on in a variety of terrain. I am happy to report that these boots served their purpose well, and I was grateful to have footwear I could trust for the climb. I hiked with these in winter for a couple months prior to the trip and didn't have any issues breaking them in. The toe box is a little wide for my narrow feet, but they fit just right with two pairs of socks or one heavy pair. They may be a bit heavy for an easy summer day hike, but these will be my go-to pair for backcountry hiking and camping.

Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Women's:
Wore these boots every day for a 5 1/2 month duration while working on a backcountry trail crew. They were very sturdy and kept my feet and ankles safe, but they NEVER EVER EVER broke in! They were uncomfortable the entire season.

Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Women's:
I have had these boots for one backpack trip. The ankle support seems adequate/good so far. No problem with breaking in. However, the stitching in the tongue of the boot - was finished with a very rough knot. This knot has rubbed against my ankle on the downhill part of the trip. I had not noticed this while wearing this in the store. So - check the inside of the tongue before purchase. I'm going to see if a boot repair shop can modify in some way.

Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Women's:
I bought these boots because I killed two pairs of lightweight boots in one season. Unfortunately these were no different.
These boots were great for their first week of backpacking. However, the seams showed wear and year by week two! The boots eaked out only season of backpacking for work, ~ 300 miles, before I literally felt like they were going to fall apart. Thank goodness REI takes anything back.
On the bright side, they never gave me blisters :)

Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Women's:
I wear a women's size 11 and this Vasque last is a bit longer than the very similar Vasque Wasatch which was my previous boot. So my toes don't run into the boot! Yay! I am walking in Europe, 4 weeks of 12-15 miles a day with 18 pounds of pack weight. The trails in Europe can be incredibly stony (think eroded streambeds) so a stiff sole and respectable ankle support are essential. These boots fill that bill. And they accommodate my custom orthotics easily. My only complaint is that the laces don't stay tied for more than about an hour, even with double knotting.

Backpacker Magazine in Apr 11 rated these boots as one of 8 mid-duty Editor's Choice. Top in classic leather catagory.

[$] for a pair of boots [...]. I found the toe box very narrow and the boots did not seem to be uniform from side to side. If I could return them even for a fraction of what I paid for them...I would! Why is it that boots always seem fine until you wear them for a couple of days...then you own a boat anchor...ugh!

Comments about Vasque Bitterroot GTX Hiking Boots - Women's:
I bought these boots because I need new ones for trekking in Nepal this fall. I was going to wait until then to review them, but I recently took them on a test run in the backcountry of Denali, and I was impressed. I'm hard on boots; the only ones that have lasted more than one season so far are the heavy-duty Montrails I bought a couple years ago, but I think these boots will give even those a run for their money. In an 8-hour day hike on my first wearing of these boots, I hiked off trail in gravel beds, tundra meadows, and high, narrow, rocky ridges. I splashed through creeks and went scree-running down an 800ft talus slope. After all this, I came away dry, with no blisters, rocks in my shoes, or sore ankles or toes. Pretty impressive. These boots are heavy, but I was expecting that. I'm looking for something that will last me more than one or two summers and hold up to some heavy abuse, while being supportive enough to backpack in and comfortable enough to wear for 12-14 hours of hiking. I think these will be it. I'll keep you posted as I wear them more and have them longer, but since they did so well the first time out and there were no reviews yet, I figured I'd say something now!
