I have used 105 components on many bikes with great success. On 90% of bikes on the road, this would be a great upgrade over the OEM deraileur. Nothing, however, will prevent a deraileur from throwing a chain if the limits are not set correctly. Best advice is that if you want trouble free riding, learn how to adjust a deraileur yourself. Not sure if one of the other reviewers realizes that in the higher end components, manuyfactures remove weight mostly by using lighter weight, often LESS durable materials. To me the 105 series hits a nice spot by combining decent durability with decent performance. While I use Dura-ace on my own bikes, I always build up a bike for my wife with 105's because they perform without breaking damaging the pocketbook.

This came as original equipment on my bike. I rolled 3100 miles with it before it needed replacement. The cage uses an inferior weak metal that bends. This was hard to keep adjusted properly. I experienced a dangerous chain lock accident at 20mph that threw me over the handle bars when this shifter put the chain between the tire and frame. I probably dropped the chain 30-40 times in 3K miles. I upgraded today to the Ultegra model. The bike mechanic told me there are a lot of problems with the flimsy metal Shimano uses on the 105. I would say spend the extra 15 bucks and get the Ultegra model.
