Great Pack but needs a few mods
I was looking for a lightweight pack to take day hiking, cycling, bikepacking, around town errands, etc. I wanted something around 10oz and was looking at the REI flash 18 when I found this. I was a little skeptical to use this on any active endeavors because it lacked a waist and sternum strap to stabilize any load. Also, no hydration bladder sleeve. What I did like was the zippered top compartment, weight, ability to pack in on itself, look and mesh side pockets. This bag would be perfect if it had the following upgrades: 1) Hydration Sleeve (for hydration bladder/ foam padding like flash 18) 2) sternum strap for support I realize not everyone is capable of modding gear like this but if you know how to sew or know someone that can help you it's worth the effort. The materials cost around $5, which is pretty much the difference in price between this pack and the flash 18 Basically i just turned the bag inside out and measured the back panel. Then cut out a piece of 1.7 ripstop to those dimensions and sewed grosgrain around the edges. Then just sewed that piece onto the grosgrain already on the bag. Oh ya, and I added a loop of paracord at the top to hang the bladder from. Second mod was to add a sternum strap. You'll need 1' of 1" nylon webbing and 1' of 3/4" nylon webbing, (2) sternum strap sliders and a 3/4" buckle (i used a whistle buckle). Basically just assemble it all and sew the 1" straps onto the shoulder straps. Easy and adjustable. The other option is just to sew the 3/4" straps straight onto the shoulder straps. Lighter and simpler but not adjustable.
Average
Pros: LIght and compact. Loved how the bag folded into itself in a handy pouch. 2 side mesh pockets also good for water bottles, umbrellas... Top compartment was roomy as well for frequently accessed items. Cons: Capacity was smaller than I had hoped. Because of it's longish rectangular shape, it was difficult to access items from the middle down when the bag was full. Unless you're carrying soft items or clothing in it, the bag is not comfortable to carry. You really have to pack it carefully/ thoughtfully for it to be comfortable to carry. Lastly, after using it for about 2 weeks straight, the colour of the fabric around the drawstring started to fade.
We bought a second one...
We've only used this bag a couple of times on hikes and as a day pack while exploring cities, but already know this will be a go-to bag when packing for any trip. It's very lightweight, easy to carry, and the pockets give you quick access to needed items while on the move. I love that it's very compact - I don't feel like I'm lugging some big, stiff bag around that's mostly empty if we happen to not need to carry around much that day. On the flip side, it holds a great deal when you do find yourself needing to carry more than a few items. We bought a second one, as both the husband and I keep reaching for this bag...
Wonderful for day trips
I borrowed a friend's for a trip to Central America, and it was the single most useful backpack I've ever seen. My friend, who leads ecological tourism trips throughout Central America and has done so for years, said it was the most useful backpack she'd ever seen. On a given trip we were able to pack four bottles of water (important to have in Nicaragua during the dry season), both our passports, both our wallets, a camera, swimwear, a utility knife, a quart bag full of snacks, and we still had space to cram in two towels. This thing held all of that through two motorcycle accidents and being dropped ten feet without any damage. This is, hands down, the best backpack for a day excursion I could imagine.
Practical lightweight daypack
I bought my first one in Jan 2015, and used it for four months of travel in SE Asia and Europe. The mesh outer pockets elastic trim eventually stretched out so my water bottle kept falling out if I bent over. I returned it to REI in Dec 2015, where the customer service person seemed skeptical at the reason for the return. I exchanged it for the same product and have used it for a seven months in Africa and Europe. The elastic has held up better, but the interior coating is peeling off, making the bag even less water resistant. I will be returning the bag when I return from Morocco and Spain, and hope REI continues to improve this daypack as it's very lightweight and holds a decent amount of stuff.
great bag, bad straps
I really like this bag but I'm dissapointed with the stitching. My first bag lasted a year and then the stitching for the front strap came undone. My second bag has only been used for a few trips and I noticed that the shoulder strap stitching is coming loose. I also recently purchased the REI Flash 18 pack which shares the same shoulder straps and I noticed the stitching on the straps are starting to fall apart as well. The heaviest thing I've carried in the bag is a 1L water bladder for day hikes. Besides the poor stitching, the only other improvement to the bag that I would like to see is a chest strap like the one on the REI Flash 18 bag. Then this bag would rock!
not for short people
Not recommended for short torsos. Nice looking bag, spacious side pockets, and top pocket (that bag folds into), great sturdy material, quality shoulder straps, but no sternum or hip strap (doesnt need a full webbed hip belt, nylon would do, but it doesnt have that. Bought this as a day pack, not for extended hikes bc as mentioned, it doesnt have sternum or hip strap, but unfortunately, once weighted down, for my torso it distributes the weight oddly, the bag is too long for my torso so it bends away from my back and throws all of the weight into my lower back.
This has been great for day hikes
I've had this for over a year now and it's been great for hiking and international traveling. The interior is one big compartment, so smaller things do tend to get lost-- things you don't want exposed in mesh outer pockets, or to fall out the top compartment if it's unzipped and you open it. The only issue I have is that the interior lining is coming off in strips (see photo). The pack has faded quite a bit in the Colorado sun, even after a year. The older version had a whistle and chest strap too, which I wish this one had.
Little Pack, Full Capacity
I travel to under developed countries to provide medical aid and teach local medical professionals in current patient care. When I leave the staging area to go out in the field I can throw everything from my stethoscope, snacks, medical supplies, spare scrubs, and what ever else I need for the day. When I travel back to the states I can fold it back up into it self and put it in my bag to save room for my other things. I wish it had a hydration pouch so I can throw my hydration bladder in there. I have to carry bottle water and sometimes that gets in my way to carry other things I want to carry with me. If it had some loops for attaching stuff that would be great also. But for what I do it does me well on my trips and hope to buy a few more in the future to have in my other bags when I travel.
Almost perfect day hike pack
I like the fact that the pack stuffs into itself to make a small package that doesn't take up much room in a suitcase. It has been serving me well on day hikes. The zippered top holds a lot and the bag closes securely. The only problem has been that water bottles fall out of the mesh pockets. These pockets really need straps or elastic around the top so the contents doesn't fall out when you take off the pack..
