Comments about REI Lumen +40 Sleeping Bag:
Used for 1 backpacking trip, about 5 car camping trips and a 6 day camp in NC. The zipper disconnects and will not reconnect to the other side, a huge issue, as it can't be used. This was a GREAT for the time it worked, but sadly I will have to return this sleeping bag.

Comments about REI Lumen +40 Sleeping Bag:
This is a nice bag for the money. it's a little tight in the shoulders for a larger male (I'm 6' 2'' 230) it was a little tight side to side at the top...but still doable...an ok compromise for size/weight.

Comments about REI Lumen +40 Sleeping Bag:
Very warm, almost too warm for summer camping but isn't too bad if you keep it unzipped. I am 6'4 and I got the long version, which was very room and perfect for a taller, bigger framed guy such as myself. Packs down very small and very light. I love this thing.

Comments about REI Lumen +40 Sleeping Bag:
This is my first non-down bag in a while (I have older synthetic TNF Shoeshoe and Cat's Meow bags), and it's the warmest-temp rated bag in some time. I have been using a 20F superlight down bag for the past couple of summers, but since a lot of my camping is on sea kayak trips I figured it was time to go conservative and pick up a synthetic bag. This seemed to fit the bill perfectly.
All of my camping is in southcentral coastal Alaska, most if it out of a sea kayak. Our summers are cool with high humidity, and punctuated with frequent rain. Summertime lows can get down to 40F, so the temp rating of this bag seemed about right. It packs down admirably small for a synthetic fill, and I put it in an 8 liter dry bag very easily. A 5 liter dry bag would do in an pinch. It fluffs up to its original loft fairy quickly when unstuffed, and I find the 40F temp rating to be pretty much spot on, though I am a reasonably warm sleeper. That said, the bag could use a little more insulation in the foot area, but otherwise the shingle construction leaves no cold spots that I could find. At around 40F I slept with a thin pair of wool socks and a silk-weight long-sleeve top and was very comfy. The baffle tube behind the zipper is snag free and keeps the heat in very well. The zipper itself has a 'lock' that I find a little too agressive, and you have to pull the zip tab just right to open the zipper, but it's not a big deal. The bag has a wonderful compartment that you can slide your pillow into. Brilliant. I like keeping ear plugs in the small zippered pocket on the side of the bag for those windy, rainy nights. I find the bag roomier than many others, and I don't feel like I am in a straight jacket at all. I can roll over without twisting the bag up like a dish rag. You aren't going to sit cross-legged in this thing, but for a mummy-style bag there is a generous cut through the leg section. The lining and shell are soft against your skin and overall the cut and construction are excellent.
I have spent 14 very pleasant nights in this bag so far, including an 11-day sea kayak trip which had some rainy periods. It's a very nice bag and a great value. Keep it up, REI.

Comments about REI Lumen +40 Sleeping Bag:
I am 6'4", 215lbs, 35" waist and this bag (long version) was a perfect fit. My first trip out with it the temps got down to 39.5* and I was very comfortable with only 'undies' on. I would probably be comfortable down around 33*-35* with extra clothing on like a shirt, shorts and 'undies', and some socks. The pillow pocket worked great with my Cocoon Ultralight pillow.
The reason for the 3 Season Plus headline is when you add a bag liner you can get any where from 10* to 25* lower temps out of this bag (depending on the liner), which, for the mountains of NC, would get you into the early and late winter months. It compresses very well and I have yet to have any super snags with the zipper. All in all, this is a great bag for the money, especially when you buy it with your 20% off member coupon.

Comments about REI Lumen +40 Sleeping Bag:
I scored a great deal on this bag (under $100), and couldn't pass up the opportunity to add a warm weather bag to my pack.
At 6'0 185, I fit easily lengthwise into the bag. The torso area is roomy enough, though the legs are fairly tight.
I found the bag adequately warm in 38-40 degree nights in Michigan's Pictured Rocks NL. Conditions were extremely windy and rainy and I was sleeping in a Sierra Designs Light Year 1 with fly.
The bag packs small for a synthetic, and fits easily into the tiny bag compartment of my Deuter Futura 42. The Women's Lumen 40 (which has much more insulation and weight), just barely fit. Weight is reasonable, fairly light and certainly suitable for backpacking. The bag seems well constructed and the zipper was relatively snag-free.
Cons: It stays wet "forever." Make sure you have protection from the rain.

Comments about REI Lumen +40 Sleeping Bag:
First off I am 6'2" 220 lbs. I got the long size, which I think is just a little too long. I sleep on my side, and at my size in this bag I feel like I want to turn into the incredible hulk and just rip the thing apart when I'm trying to get comfortable. I feel very constricted trying to move around and adjust and have had many sleepless nights in this bag. If you are smaller, it might work great for you. At my size though I dislike this sleeping bag. As for the temp rating, I would say it's off. I'm only comfortable in this bag on nights where it's 60+. At 40 degrees I am freezing in this bag and definitely not a happy camper. One night it dropped to 35 and I was in 2 jackets, thermal pants, pants, and two pairs of socks on top of an insulated mat and it barely worked. This is a summer bag strictly. Look into something better for more use.

Comments about REI Lumen +40 Sleeping Bag:
I bought this bag about a third of the way into a summer road trip (the Southern US part was the first third). I still ended up splitting time between this and my summer (+55) bag/liner (and combining them at points), but man would I have suffered if I didn't decide to pick this up. This bag kept me warm everywhere we went. I used it in the 40's with ease, and combined it with my liner for for the nights in the 30's at Crater Lake and Yellowstone. With both those bags, I was a little warm with it zipped all the way at first, but slept very comfortably. I'm 6' 5" and the long version of this bag is plenty long enough to stretch out. I am thin though. Using it with my liner it did get a bit cozy, but not even close to the point of discomfort.
I look forward to many good trips with this bag.

Comments about REI Lumen +40 Sleeping Bag:
I bought the long bag and it still compresses down to the size of a football. I am 6 foot 4 inches and the length fits me fine. The only con I would mention is that there isn't a lot of side-to-side room once you are zipped up. Definitely not going to fit two people in there. I picked this bag because it fit me so well, but you may need a little more room. Recommend you try it on at REI before you buy. For the money, this was a great deal. The bag is a +40, so it's not made for cold, cold weather. I bought a fleece liner for colder trips. I love the pillow pocket and the wallet pocket too.
