Comments about Kelty Noah's Tarp - 16' x 16':
I've only just received this shelter and set it up once in the backyard using 9' oars as the supports, so this review is initial impressions only. It is a very large tarp, and in addition to grommets and webbing tabs at all four corners, the version I received also has grommets and tabs mid-point on each side (it appears different than the picture on the REI website - possibly an older model). In addition, each side has two more tabs without grommets between the center grommet and the corners. There are also webbing loops along both the long and short axis ridge lines to accommodate suspending the tarp from above. The result is a tarp with nearly limitless pitching options, depending on the situation. I supported the tarp with oars as it will primarily be used as a kitchen/dining shelter on multi-day river trips, with the attachment over the oar handle made using parachute cord loops tied into the webbing tab. I do plan on acquiring the Kelty extendable poles to increase pitching options and for camping trips not involving the boat.
While this tarp is a great value even without poles, be warned that the base tarp purchase does not include the poles, which will set you back another $40 apiece. All in, however, my research revealed that the Kelty 16 tarp/pole combination is still only about 1/3 the price of the comparably sized tarp/pole sets sold in combination by other manufacturers.
The tarp appears to be very well constructed, and folds/rolls into a very compact package (about the size of a typical 2-person tent) given the size of this beast. It comes with a stuff sack that is long enough to accommodate the tarp as well as the Kelty extendable poles if you choose to get them, as well as 8 parachute-cord guy lines with tensioners. It only comes with 4 tiny aluminum tent stakes that are entirely worthless for holding up a tarp this size, especially in any sort of wind. I have several heavy duty military surplus stakes and segments of rebar that I will use when trees/rocks are not available for tying off. It was windy when I set the tarp up, and it was easy enough to get the tension and tie offs right given the multiple options for attachment and the slick included tensioners.
My only knocks would be the wimpy stakes, and while the tensioners worked well, they are plastic and appear they could be a weak point over time. The tarp itself is also lighter in weight than some of the other options out there, so I could envision durability becoming an issue.
All in all, however, the Kelty Noahs Tarp 16 represents what I believe is the best overall compromise between price, size (both set up and rolled), and durability of every comparable tarp currently on the market.

Saw this in use in a smaller older model and thougth in the PNW it'd be a good investment. Took it to the Ocean where we ended up car camping amoung the trees and it was great! Complete coverage, almost too big but we and all our stuff stayed dry. Bought the expensive pole as well and ended up using it atop the picnic table to add addt'l highth. This would be perfect in the summer for shade & family gatherings.'will try the med one for camping as well.

Please think about how big 16 feet is before you purchase this tarp. The design and fabric are outstanding, but sadly I was horrified by how huge this tarp was when I got it home. 16 feet is massive. If you car camp and want shelter for a larger group or the entire picnic table plus some, this is a great option. I will be keeping my 16 footer, but also looking for a much smaller and lighter option for those times when weight and size matters. Love the design and fabric and assortment of tie points. My blue tarp days are over.
