I am new to hiking and, being a plus-sized girl, was nervous about being embarrassed and looking huge on the trail... The khaki styles I've tried on do just that. I got these pants in "coal" and they are amazing. Yes, they have a more modern fit, so I guess I'm a modern girl. The waist is large, but adjustable by two ties on either side. I've comfortably worn them on two hikes now and the ties hold and are comfortable. I prefer the style of converting to capris because 1) i feel better having my knees protected on a hike and 2) when you're plus-sized and pants are tighter around the thighs, having a zipper there for conversion to shorts can chafe and feel uncomfortable. They are also supremely stretchy-- able to scramble over boulders with no concern. They might not be perfect pants for taller ladies-- I am 5'7" and they were long enough to be about 1cm off the ground when wearing hiking shoes.
Being styled modernly and available in a darker color, I feel like I actually look good in them. Can't tell you how much that's done for my hiking confidence-- amazing how a pair of pants can do that.

With so many mixed reviews, I wanted to try them out for a while. I am 5'4 w/a 42" waist, 49" hip, & 51" thigh. Now, after hiking up Smith Rock in OR, doing a few more level hikes closer to home, and one whitewater rafting trip (unzipped w/o any riding up between legs woohoo), I decided to buy another.
I have the 22 in coal which works fine, but wanted the khaki in 24 for a relaxed fit (I'm used to cinching the waist on most of my clothes anyway). Both sizes are gone. :(
I also wanted to ask REI for a few things:
1. Keep changing the styles. Plus-sized women have different shapes. The Rendezvous style was great for those with an apple shape or those who wanted a 'modern' look. But it would be nice to offer larger sizes for us bottom-heavy gals to size-up.
2. The ties worked to bring in the material but please have the tie openings closer to the actual buttonsnap because whenever my shirt lifted you could see the knot.
3. To help us gals understand your styles, please, please, please stick to key words to distinguish the fits. I've seen relaxed used a couple times but then when I check the sizing chart, the measurements are different. You could use slim fit for future Rendezvous-like styles and relaxed fit for the the wider-legged styles. I have REI relaxed-fit pants size 20 and these slim-fit pants in a 22. Less confusion=less returns.
4. Stick to one sizing chart. Why do some REI clothes use Extended Sizes while others use REI Plus Sizes?
I know I went on and on, but I do appreciate REI for the plus-sized selections. I just wanted to offer solutions to the mixed reviews.

I don't like the waist on these. I'm so tired of clothing manufacturers trying to force EVERY woman into the dropped waist style, just because a few women happen to like that style. And these are not normal convertible hiking pants that convert to shorts - the zipper is below the knee. This is not my style of pant at all. I'd like to see REI offer a more comprehensive selection of plus-size clothing.

I love these hiking pants! The waist is a little bit big, but there's a built in drawstring you can use to cinch them. Unlike some plus-size pants, they aren't universally tent-like, so they are somewhat flattering and nice-looking. The only issue I had was with one of the internal zippers to make the pants convertible - it had a little extra zipper backing fabric sticking out that was really scratchy. But, I just trimmed it down with scissors, and no more problems.

I wish that I would have read the reviews about this item. I would have to agree with a couple of the women who offered their two cents on these pants. I am a plus sized woman, who camps and hikes monthly. I bought these pants for a trip out to Crater Lake and Redwoods.
I would also love outdoor clothing that is durable and doesn't make me look like a man. I was very excited when REI started making plus sized clothing, but have been disappointed with the selection and unreliable sizing.
Please REI, improve your plus sized selection! Us girls want to be comfortable while outdoors!

First off, I was happy to find plus size convertible pants in the first place! However, that wasn't enough for me to give this a higher rating.
Like other reviewers, I found that the fit of these pants is strange. They run small, especially in the thighs. I had to order the largest size to get a proper, not skin-tight fit in my thighs, and then when I buttoned and tied the waist, I was left with a bunch of fabric waving in the breeze at the waistband. Then when I sit down, I feel like they're pulling in the thigh area anyway.
If you're the least bit on the tall side (I'm 5'10"), these do not unzip to "capri" length, but rather "immediately below the knee" length. I would love to see these available in tall like the smaller sized pants.
The pants are very lightweight and breathe well, and kept me from feeling too sweaty while hiking, so that's good, but it took a while to get used to the zippers rubbing directly below my knees.

I am an athletic plus size woman. I have been looking for some good hiking pants for awhile now. I ordered these and they fit horrible!!! Please REI when you make plus size clothing please actually have a plus size person try them on first!!! I'm 5'8 and the pants were almost capri's on me. I'm glad I have the REI membership so I am returning them. Do yourself a favor, save the $ and buy something else!!

I love this pant! The fit is excellent except for the waist which is a little large; however, there is an adjustable waistband. I love the lower rise. There is adequate room in the hip, but the pants themselves are not too loose. I love the zip capri for warmer weather. Overall, a terrific hiking capri/pant as well as perfect for beach and family activities.
