Comments about Alpen 20 x 50 Ultralite Spotting Scope:

I wasn't expecting a lot from a lower-priced scope, but I tried it in the store and was pleased. But it really impressed me when I got it home and started looking out into the field behind the house.
Just to get it out of the way, the tripod is not terribly useful, but it does work. Even so, I screwed the scope onto a light photo tripod I had in the closet, so I wouldn't have to squat down all the time.
I have been more than impressed by how clear the image is, through this scope. It is just perfect for my purpose, which is short-range watching of the critters and birds over the back fence. The typical distances are 20-100 yards.
The detail I can get from this scope is more than I was hoping for. I can now see the plumage on the birds and I can tell if the coyote has a mouse or a squirrel.
I haven't taken this into the field, so can't comment on durability just yet.
