Great concept, but needs some work
The reason I bought this lighter is because I had a bunch of disposable lighters I got from an uncle that quit smoking, not sure if they would fit I bought this with the peace of mind that if there were a problem, REI would handle it. Fortunately it all worked out well, the A-liters fit just fine into the Soto Pocket Torch, and the flame worked just as I hoped. While I like this product, there are still some improvements to be made, namely the ergonomics of this Lighter, the way it's made is not comfortable for the thumb to click and hold. One thing that you may want to do is to turn the light output on high before you stick it in the the Pocket Torch, makes the flame a bit stronger that way.
Mine works great!
I received mine yesterday and I have to say it fires up on the first click everytime. I think having the right lighter in it (Scripto) has a big impact on performance. I use Scripto view disposables. The lighter fits tight into the polycarbonate sleeve and there is very little to no rattle of the lighter inside the case. I tried lighting it in every position including upside down and it lit without fail the first time everytime. The build looks quality and it is made in Japan not china as some have said. Remember not to keep it lit for more than one minute at a time or the heat will melt the head of the torch!
Skeptical no longer
Due the simplicity of this product, I found it a bit hard to believe it would work as advertised. Since REI has always had such a great return policy, I figured it was worth the risk. Simply put: It works great. I use it at work, as well as outdoors. It's affected slightly by high winds, but certainly much less than a lighter would be on its own. It's just a great idea, with the slickest, simplest possible source of fuel anyone could think to use. Also, as well as the flame improvement over a lighter, you can keep the flame going for as long as you want, without the handle heating up. An amazng little device.
THIS IS INCREDIBLE!
Used this in decent conditions, a little cold, fairly dry. Worked with damp wood too. Worked like a charm every time, just make you push down all the way and hold it for a second or two (like the directions say). Not sure why people are lowering their rating because they couldn't find a lighter right away that fit or because they didn't read the instructions. If you go to soto's website they have a list of lighters and where you can find them. Any rectangular lighter should work, the ones that have curved sides i.e. B*c will not. Don't leave for a camping/backpacking trip without this. This is incredible!!!
Functions as it's own backup
I beat the living tar out of it. I never put this thing away. I use it to light cigars, seal the ends of paracord, and of course, light all kinds of fires. I kept it with me working on a farm all summer and through Halloween. I dropped in dirty mud, kept it in my pocket which accumulated all kinds of dirt and debris, and it held up. It started to take a few attempts to light and the flame was pretty sparse, so I took it apart, cleaned out the fuel channel and put it back together and it's bodacious again. Buy one for your yourself, or your idiot friend.
Box of Awesome!
This thing is awesome, my new favorite gadget. It works great the lighters aren't too hard to find, and it is really fun. Your friends will be jealous. Very effective from anything from cigars to cord to torches to stoves it just rocks. Small light. Doesn't seem waterproof though. Get it!!!
Cool pocket torch that uses disposable lighters!
The directions weren't very clear on the type of disposable lighters needed. Me being a non-smoker, I took the SOTO to a local smoke shop. The clerk didn't know either. A smoke shop customer recognized the SOTO, and pointed to a bucket of cheap lighters right in front of us on the counter. Problem solved. Thank you good samaritan. To adjust the intensity of the flame output, the "+ -" adjuster is on the disposable lighter. The higher your altitude, the more "+" adjustment needed. May not work above 5,000 sea level.
Great For The Price
I've used this lighter for a full year now, and for[$], it's a keeper. It was given Backpacker Magazine Editors Choice Award, which is why I bought it.The ignitor, you need to click once and then click again in succession to start it, but then it puts out a good jet of flame Not a fault of the lighter, but because the gas needs to escape the disposable lighter into the SOTO chamber. It would be nice to have the option of using any disposable in it (can't use round BICs), but I bought a 6 pack of rectangle Scripto lighters for a couple bucks and no problem. My only Mod is I put a tiny rectangle of soda-can aluminum in the bottom so the disposable doesn't jiggle around.Compared to a high end refillable lighter this is a great deal, I recommend it. - Cheers
Nice Hand Torch But...
Nice torch works on the second click every time. Quite wind proof and can be re-ignited quickly if it blows out. The flame is compact and HOT. I use it for fusing synthetic rope ends for Scout projects. The flame is compact and very close to your hand so igniting stoves, lanturns or fuel laden charcoal is tricky. The big plunger button is easy to use with gloves or cold fingers (think To Build a Fire) but this same fature makes me think twice about carrying it around in my pocket. If you have ever butt dialed a cellphone or set off your car alarm from your pocket the potential for lighting this in your pocket is clear. Nice tool if you carry it carefully.
Amazing Company
My boyfriend and I were making a trip from Phoenix back to Nebraska and came across this gadget in SLC. We had been looking for a good camping torch and had to have it, especially with the ratings from backpacker. Turns out our little torch was faulty, so we emailed the company and told them what happened and they sent us a brand new one the next day. No questions asked. Soto is clearly a great company that cares about their customers and the products they produce. One could not ask for a better customer service in a company. The torch itself works great and got us through our camping trip home.
