Comments about REI Everyday Merino Crew Socks - Men's:
The reason these socks catch so much lint is because they pill, which Merino wool oughn't do. While out of the box the socks appear as tightly-woven as comparable "every day" Merino wool socks after even a day of wear around the house these socks begin to pill and become fuzzy, so much so that the REI logo on the toe becomes obscured. Again Merino wool isn't supposed to come apart in this way leading me to believe these socks are not very durable.

Having bought 14 pairs of Smartwool(tm) years ago and achieved 6 years of use in the military, the second batch of Smartwool(tm) socks failed after less than a year. I've been looking for something durable, warm and can handle daily abuse (military never simply 'uses' things). These are more than replacements, these are THE wool sock. The sock cuffs come up higher on the calf (I'm 74"), can handle repeated washings AND dryings (15-20 currently) - air dry is NOT an option, and the weft maintains body especially if washed inside out. These socks are still soft, warm and are not loosing their weft - which means my feet enjoy fluffy socks daily. They are doing my feet very well right now since it is 1 degree outside and my house is drafty with tile floors.

Comments about REI Everyday Merino Crew Socks - Men's:
I wear these socks for daily use, mainly during the cooler months inside boots (insulated and uninsulated) or sneakers for casual wear. When I worked in an office I could wear them with dress shoes too (well, technically not THESE particular socks, but similar styled wool socks from other brands). These socks are great in many areas because wool is such a wonderful fabric for clothing due to its warming, cooling, moisture wicking, and durability - but something about these socks makes them attract lint like nothing I've ever seen before. Walk across some carpet and they are no longer black, and do not EVER dry them without a dryer sheet or you'll be sorry. The static will attract every last fiber of lint in that dryer and attach them to these socks. Then you'll be stuck with these huge white lint balls stuck all over your socks that lint rollers can't remove. My cotton/poly/spandex socks don't attract lint around the house at all and I own several pairs of similar wool socks from Smartwool and Icebreakers and none of those socks attracts so much lint either. It's really annoying. I won't buy any more of these and will stick with either Smartwool or Icebreakers for wool socks instead, even though they are a few dollars more expensive.
The attached photo was taken after only wearing (and washing / drying) the socks twice.

I volunteer with the Coast Guard and bought these to go with ODU's. I've been using them for about a year now and have been super stoked on the purchase. Excellent excellent sock, super comfy, stretchy, and they wick away moisture very well. I can wear these in hefty 8" boots all day on or off the water and still be comfortable when I get home. It's surprisingly hard to find QUALITY boot socks in plain black, so I really appreciate that REI sells these and hope that they continue to do so. Prior to this I was relegated to wearing SmartWools with a thin black dress sock pulled up over them.
I'd like to buy more for casual use and perhaps even hiking now.

Excellent sock for daily use in Iraq. I purchased multiple socks( REI merino light hiker, Smartwool light hiker, Smartwool ultra light hiker, Thorlo light hiker) looking for a cool, durable, and fast drying sock. The REI everyday merino was by far the best and less expensive than the Smartwool socks (which wore out far too fast for the price).

Bought last night, so I cant attest to the longevity of these, but they are super comfy, and a nice snug fit, they really wrap snug around the toes and arch of the foot w/o being too tight. They are thin (not to thin) and I wore them around for a couple of hours and didnt get sweaty, they are really nice feeling. My wife laughed at me that I spent [$] for one pair of socks, but she doesn't know how awesome they really are!
