by DrValfromgreat all purpose skiAfter borrowing and renting skis a few times, this was the first set I bought. I bought them only because, out of the various packages available, the Madshus boot fit my foot the best. I am glad it did. I have since had the chance to compare them to other cruising-style skis by Fischer and Rossignol and I definitely prefer these. They are just a little narrower and longer than other such skis but only just. I have found they are faster with better glide than comparable skis. I do use some glide wax even though you don't need to .
Compared to more traditional, skinnier, waxable skis they are definitely a little slower with less glide on well-groomed trails. However, they are much easier to live with and actually become both more stable and faster when conditions are less than ideal. I have had them out several times in a few inches of fresh, ungroomed powder and they floated and broke trail nicely. They also cut well on downhills, although you obviously cannot be as aggressive as with metal-edged skis.
Basically, if you want to own only one set of skis or want a pair to learn on that will still be fun when your skills increase, I would highly recommend these. They do everything adequately and nothing poorly.
Next season, I will treat myself either to a set of waxable super-skinnies or some big fat metal-edged backcountry skis. I have not decided which. Either way, I will probably find myself still using these the most.

by Mike KfromGreat First Ski!This ski caught my eye at REI as it was as narrow and light as the more expensive skis, plus it has an agressive tread in the kick zone for sure grip. I purchased this ski as soon as it went on sale at REI and went for my first trial run as soon as 1k of groomed trails opened up. I found these skis to be exactly as described, light and lively! They are so light, stable, and comfortable that they feel like a natural extension of my body. As a beginner it took no time at all to feel confident and stable in them. They have excellent glide and seem fast. Being 5'11" and 190lbs I was set up with the longest size Madshus Cadence 100 skis by the helpful sale person at REI. Still these were very maneuverable, light, and natural feeling. I never crossed skis when I had to duck walk up a steep hill. Being flat footed I was hesitant to purchase the cheapest model ski boot, but after about an hour in them my feet were still perfectly comfortable and sweat free with no sore areas. The poles feel light and easy to move, and grip well on all surfaces. On the way home I also stopped to try them in 3" of fresh powder in a baseball / football field park. They were just as fast and easy gliding in light powder as on the groomed trails. Once again my feet remained comfortable and dry without gaiters. This ski package performs wonderfully, is quick to get acustomed to, and are an excellent value for beginner to intermediate skiers. I would recommend the Madshus Cadence 100 to my closest family and friends. This ski is a superb product for this price point.
