Comments about Garmin Topo United States 100K Maps - microSD Data Card:

I've used this map set for hiking in the Carolina mountains, and for canoeing and hiking trips around North Florida. The maps are accurate.

However, maps purchased in this format (microSD) from Garmin cannot be transferred to your PC. So, these maps are almost useless for planning a trip since you're limited to viewing the maps solely on your GPS device.

One nifty feature is you can use Garmin's BaseCamp program (free download)to view waypoints and tracks overlayed on Google Earth satellite photos.

If you want to use topos for planning as well as field use, better to purchase the DVD's or downloads for use on you PC, then you can load your handheld with the map sections you need for a specific trip.

This map set is good for telling you where you are and when you get back, where you've been. But don't depend on it to plan a trip.

When I put it in my Garmin eTrex Vista HCx it would not work; the unit did not seem to recognize that the micro SD was even inserted. It took several calls to REI and Garmin to figure out the problem. It turns out that I have an older model and the software needed to be updated in order to read cards greater than 2GB. I went to www.garmin.com/webupdater and updated my software. That solved the problem and when I re-inserted my micro SD it worked perfectly.

As far as the product goes, it works just as advertised. 100K is plenty of detail for me. I backpack in different parts of the country and I did not want to deal with the hassle or expense of buying a different chip for different locations.
