I will start off by saying that these are great boots. My 6-year old twins used these last year as winter boots. HOWEVER, they do not come water-proof! I had to apply a silicone spray to them once I realized that the boots and socks were getting wet. After the spray they were fine for the snow, slush, etc.

I bought these for my son shortly after the beginning of 3rd grade, he'd lived in Keen Newports all summer long and wasn't thrilled with the idea of trading them in to wear closed shoes to school once the weather began cooling. We both liked the idea of waterproof comfort for fall rainy weather and beyond.

My son reported the boots were comfortable from the get go and they were indeed waterproof for awhile. However, as the weather got wetter, so did his boots and eventually his socks.

Now since I'm not actually the one wearing the boots it's hard for me to establish whether they've met the saturation point, if he isn't lacing tight enough (doesn't seem to be the problem) or what exactly is going on. What I do know is the boy's feet get soaked and we were both hoping to avoid that.

He still insists on wearing the boots, though, because he likes the look and comfort. So points for that but alas, I couldn't recommend them to a friend seeking *waterproof* boots.

I got this hiker for my daughter and we went with one size larger, because the tend to fit on the small size. I have to say they are great. She wore them on our backcountry canoe trip in the poring rain with her gortex pants tucked over, and with all the water in the bottom of the canoe from the rain she was good to go. When we got to the site finally, I took them off and couldn't believe how toasty warm and dry her feet were. I was thrilled, a happy little camper makes an even happier big camper.
