Comments about The North Face Varius Guide Pants - Men's Tall:
I recently transfered to Alaska for work and purchased these pants in preparation for the tough brush and harsh environment. I am extremely pleased with how they have held up to water, ice, rock, and long days of hiking. I have worn them on treks that have taken me through snow and high winds. They breath well and are completely water and windproof. The light insulation do not make them bulky and allow for a wide range of motion. I wore only long-underwear underneath in sub-zero temps and faired just fine. The tough Cordura fabric stood up nicely against thickets of scrub brush and thorns. I had no problem negotiating rocks and sliding down ice covered slopes on my butt.
The only difficulty I have had was with fitting. I am 6'5" and purchased the Regular length without thinking of getting the Long version. I will definitely trade for the Long. Also, the description of the internal gaitors is misleading. The elastic gaitors at the bottom of the legs do not secure and hang loose much like those in heavier ski pants. I would strongly advise using these pants along with seperate gaitors to ensure the snow does not find its way up the pants and in your socks.
The one final fit issue I had was the waist. I generally wear between 36-38" and while these pants have velcro adjustments to tighten or loosen the waist, I found myself constantly readjusting my waist when using the hip strap on my backpack. The suspenders can help you find a good fit, though, and allow the waist to ride in the right spot.
Bottom Line: These pants performed EXACTLY as I wanted them to - they are the perfect lightweight, waterproof and ultra-durable pants that go everywhere you want to go. They are extremely versatile and are worth every penny.
