The R4® jacket provides windproof protection and is the warmest Regulator® fleece from Patagonia.

Regulator insulation provides phenomenal compressibility, light weight warmth and moisture transport, whether used alone or as part of a layering system
Polartec® Windbloc® fabric has a high-loft exterior and R2® grid interior; a windproof laminate sandwiched between creates a toasty, full-stretch package
Sonic-welding and micro stitching on the zipper seams greatly reduces bulk; the R4 jacket is very supple and sleek
Microfleece lines the collar, cuffs and hem
Offset shoulder yokes ensure pack-wearing comfort; an interior wind flap prevents chill through the center-front zipper

This jacket is warm and stylish, but it REALLY needs some sort of drawcord at the waist. When using this jacket for skiing (as an underlayer) or any other cold weather activity, expect a draft from the bottom.

Extremely warm for its weight. I use it as a midlayer under a shell for very cold/wet, and on it's own with a thin wool base for bike commuting, and it works very well for both. Some reviewers have pointed out it lacks a drawcord for the waist and velcro for the cuffs. This is true, but has not been an issue for me because my cold weather gloves have gaiters to keep the drafts out of the sleeves, and the bike position does not let wind penetrate from the bottom. The fit is relaxed too, which I am fine with.

very warm and windproof, but zipper is way lame.it's too small, and splits all the time.front of collar is Jingus too. when it's zipped up, it's good. when zipper is down, collar won't lay down, and it pokes you in the chin.definitely not worth [$]

Awesome fleece. Super Soft. Super warm. Looks great. Blocks wind great. I've never been cold and I live in Minneapolis where it gets to -40 F. I love it.

Nitpicking: -1 star for the fit and lack of pit zips. I think it should fit a little snugger for the avid adventure types, unless you want to layer a lot underneath it. Also, the zipper isn't perfect and more ergonomic pockets for the hefty retail pricetag. I got it on clearance so I can't really complain.

This has become the best recreational all-around jacket I have ever used. Daily. Casual on the town with jeans, Packing, Climbing and virtually any moderate to cold weather conditions. Combine it with a thin capaline base and a waterproof stretch shell and it is a active bombshell that meets virtually every outdoor need.
