I purchased a R1 full zip a few months back because I wanted a versatile lightweight jacket for a shoulder season swing through a few countries in southern Africa. I settled on the R1 because no one else seems to make a good-looking light weight fleece that is suitable for warmer temps. I've taken the R1 on a few fall hikes in the Northeast and a few winter bike rides and I can say that the garment does breathe nicely, but conversely it offers absolutely zero protection against the wind. Anything lower than 60F, or if its 65F and really windy, you will be quite cold in just the R1. The jacket is fairly handy piece of clothing for layering and it is a nice looking garment for casual or athletic wear, but detracting from its looks the outer layer of the R1 pills very easily. After just a couple of months of light use my R1 jacket had pilled up around the waist, sleeves and several other areas making it look like a cheap light-weight polyester jacket not a $150 piece of outdoor "performance" wear.

Cheap, thin, breezy, polyester jacket or a highly breathable, stylish and versatile component of a layering system. I guess its all in the eye of the beholder.

Comments about Patagonia R1 Full-Zip Fleece Jacket - Men's:

I often wear this around town - and always on the trail. It breaths well, dries quickly and is warm. With a thin base layer, the R1, and a soft-shell or rain jacket thrown over, I stay warm while active down to mid the 20's. With an additional fleece under the R1 and the wind/rain shell over it, I stay warm around camp in the same temps.

This is a great piece of gear. It can stand alone in mild seasons and works well within a layering system for cold weather.
