Comments about REI Midweight Polartec Power Dry Crew - Men's:
Please bring back the old design! The new version has no spandex and lycra to give it that athletic fit. I love my old midweight shirts because they fit closely and can be worn on the trail or under my dress shirts. The new ones are loose fitting and the sleeves are baggy, leading to the material bunching up. I wear XL so maybe this problem is limited to my size, but I'm really not happy about the change in design. :-(

Comments about REI Midweight Polartec Power Dry Crew - Men's:
I work in a cold warehouse and wear base ayers under my uniform polo shirt. When REI came out with these base layers I went and stalked up. My wife immediately did not like the new material because you could tell it was sports material. So i started wearing them to work. i got enough for each day of the week. 2 weeks in one snagged! So I only got to wear it twice. Last winter I couldn't find the old style REI base layers in my size so I bought another brand of base layers somewhere else at half the price of these and they actually worked better than these had it not been for the arms shrinking over time. Im very disappointed in the quality here and am now on the search for a decent base layer. And by the way I still have a set of the old REI base layers I use for snowboarding and have had them for years and thy hold up great so why REI switched I have no idea. All I can think is that these yield a better profit. Or at least until people return them because they are ripped.

Could agree more with SpeedyNY.
Bring back the old style! Unable to wear under work clothes due to baggy fit and sleeves that are too long. Will be returning mine and looking for alternatives similar to old style.
Also, need to get price under $25.

Comments about REI Midweight Polartec Power Dry Crew - Men's:
I have used the REI mids for work and play for several years. Prior to that I would have to replace other brands yearly. This year I need to replace a few sets. I am not pleased with the material of the new product. It is scratchy and catches easily. Not the same quality as the previous version. If it isn't broke don't fix it, please! Guess I am looking again.

Comments about REI Midweight Polartec Power Dry Crew - Men's:
I have the older style (mid-2009 Item# 7317080013) REI Midweight MTS Long-Sleeve Crew. The fit and material is excellent.
The new material (Polartec Power Dry) is just awful. Very cheap, not stretchy and snags easily. The fit is also off.
REI used to make quality clothing, but from what I've seen lately, it's really gone downhill.

Comments about REI Midweight Polartec Power Dry Crew - Men's:
Fits well, dries fast, looks good, reasonably priced. My only concern with the shirt is that the arm seams are placed on the inside of the arms, near the torso. The seams are right where the shoulder straps of my backpack rub which is causing the seams to fray just at those two spots. If you wear it under something it's fine but my normal use is to use it as my only layer during spring, summer, and fall unless it's raining heavily. I own similiar shirts of a different brand that do not have this problem due to the arm seams being placed on the top and outside of the sleeves.

Comments about REI Midweight Polartec Power Dry Crew - Men's:
I live in Western NC and got this for cycling in the cooler fall weather. It exceeded my expectations in every way. I wore this under a standard short sleeve cycling jersey. Ambient temps on my ride started in the upper 50's and peaked in the lower 60's. Temps would swing nearly 10 degrees however when going from full sun exposure to shaded areas of the road. I was never too warm or too cold. Even at 30mph on the downhills, I was completely comfortable. The interior has a waffle knit that really enhances the wicking action. I never once felt damp or cold spots due to perspiration. I can see this being a perfect base layer to a mid-weight sweater or fleece jacket and is perfect for moderate to high activity levels. Overall I'm totally thrilled with this and am planning on grabbing at least one more.

Comments about REI Midweight Polartec Power Dry Crew - Men's:
I loved the color and price of this shirt (Orion Blue). The last REI mid-weight underwear shirt I had finally wore out after many years of use. It was such a perfect shirt. However, the design has changed (as evident by many other reviews) and I'm not a fan. I returned mine because of the fit. Usually an XL is just right for me, but this time it was a little bit too small. The worst part was feeling like the shirt was on backwards when it wasn't. The neckline I guess felt too high up in front and too low in back. Very odd.

Why is everyone crying? Seriously, these shirts function as they should and better than the last generation of thermals.
To those complaining about the sizing being tight, it should be because these are meant to be a base layer, not a standard long sleeve shirt. I have the old and new versions, and the newer version is what I would call fitted, whereas the older were just a regular fit. The more the shirt contacts your body, the more sweat it can wick away which is the point of a base layer.. sheesh. Size up if it is too small for you, but being a regular size human and not an average fat American, I can say it is fitted true to size for a fitted garment.
The PowerDry material wicks away sweat much better than the previous model, is more breathable on its own, and yet has a waffle weave material that provides fantastic dead air space (insulation) when layered under another garment.
My only complaint would be that I do wish it had some stretchy material added. There is some stretch, but I would like a little more for a closer fitting technical piece.
Tested over 4 days backpacking in the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness and worked great. Worth 4 stars but added one for all the folks who rated it low who should be buying a long sleeve Sahara shirt and not a base layer.

Great underlayer shirt! I work in an unheated shop, spend time in an office, and on the weekends I'm outside on a bike or or foot. And as a bonus I can buy a product that is made in USA. I liked this "Lightweight Shirt", so I bought its sister middleweight shirt for even colder days. The comments about ripping, I dunno, must be posts by REI competitors? I work in an industrial setting and these shirts survive everything but welding sparks.
