Comments about REI Shuksan Pants with eVent Fabric - Men's 30" Inseam:
I destroy ski pants. Backcountry touring, hut trips, resort laps, you name it. Year after year, I end up buying a new pair that - by mid season - has been repaired with duct tape, aquaseal, and the like. Trying to rely on a pair of 'resort' pants in the backcountry is just lame, and the wear shows easily. Drying them out night after night gets old, and while having multi-colored tape on your legs may look cool, you know each repair job only means another hole for air to escape and for snow to get in! They never seem to handle the ultra-cold days, and always get wet in the springtime. Overall, most ski pants suck - unless you spend the cash.
SO, this pair of pants is different. First, the price is great. Under $300! Next, it's a SHELL, so the pants breathe very well. You need to have a good layer underneath, but the fact you can zip them off from both legs is a huge benefit, esp when getting into a tent deep in the snow -- Keep those booties on!
The fabric is also very durable; the added protection and gaiters is exactly what you want in deep snow with ski boots that love to destroy the ankle area. The only thing I kind of miss is a rear pocket, but hey no biggie.

Comments about REI Shuksan Pants with eVent Fabric - Men's 30" Inseam:
The biggest reason I went with these pants rather than more reasonably priced Marmot pants is because of the variable inseam length. I have short legs, I'll admit it, and finding shell pants that are comfortable around the waist and don't drag 2 inches off my boots is a great thing.
On top of that, these pants are fantastic when it comes to being breathable and waterproof. The water seemingly does not even touch them. Some light hiking pants underneath and they are fine down to about 30 degrees. Some solid thermals additional, and 0 degrees is no problem.
I really can't stress enough that they are breathable. running around with my dogs in snow, or going on long walks, perspiration vents. No more starting off cold, ending it up sweating!
I am waiting for the Shuksan jacket to go on sale, to add that to the pants.
The gaiters are also a must for me, I usually wear heavy leather hiking boots in all types of snow, so preventing snowing getting in is pretty important. They have only let snow in once, and that was my fault as I didn't seal up the velco well enough.
The only down side is, the extra cost due to the Recco locators. I guess I would have preferred to have saved $20 to $40 and NOT had them.

Comments about REI Shuksan Pants with eVent Fabric - Men's 30" Inseam:
I narrowed my ski pant search to the Shuksan and Arc'Teryx because I needed a serious pant for the wet snow we get in the pacific northwest and the breathability for the backcountry hikes. Decided to go with the Shuksan based on the eVent material and REI's dedication to great gear.
I've had the pants for 2 years and they haven't failed...except for last weekend in the rain. The seat of my long underware actually got wet after riding the chair lift for only 2 hours. Granted I was sitting in a puddle of water on the chair rides and they were more damp than wet, but I expected more.
This is the first time I have not been happy with the pants and generally they are a great pant in almost all conditions. The breathability is great while skinning / hiking. All in all a great pant, except for that one day...

Comments about REI Shuksan Pants with eVent Fabric - Men's 30" Inseam:
Just got the pants so I haven't had a chance to field test them, but here are initial thoughts.
The pants appear and feel well made and as if they will be durable. I ordered a 34" waist and they seem a little big (5' 8 1/2", 190 lbs), though the waist is adjustable, and the pants are abviously cut for layering. The Shuksans fit well with a heavy base layer underneath, but pants made of heavier materials (e.g., jeans or soft shell pants) may not fit so well underneath depending on how the Shuksan pants initially fit you.
The belt loops will accomodate 2" belts, and the pockets are generous but not too bulky.
Not sure how the full zippered legs will work when confronted with continuous and heavy rain, but the zippers appear well made and durable and they do have a storm flap.
My only gripe thus far is that the rip-and-stick adjustable tabs on the pant cuffs do not cinch the cuffs tight enough and there is the potential for extra material to get snagged on vegetation, etc.

Comments about REI Shuksan Pants with eVent Fabric - Men's 30" Inseam:
Wore these every day in wind, rain and snow on 2 week trek across several 17,000 ft passes in Peruvian Andes, and modest higher climbing. Pants never heated upon ascents even though I never opened the zipper vents. Amazingly, they kept me bone dry in long days of rain and snow while my two partners in their own pricey pants were cold and wet. Fit comfortably even though they look bulky by to the eye. Almost cried when I ripped them at the knee when they snagged on a finger of jagged lava. REI's partner, Rainy Pass, patched them up beautifully. Can't wait to use them skiing.

Great pants. When they say you dont need vents they really do mean it! My only hesitation in purchasing these pants was that there were no vents, but I've been on some pretty gnarly backcountry tours and have had no sweaty legs. They are waterproof too. I have stayed bone dry in them.

Comments about REI Shuksan Pants with eVent Fabric - Men's 30" Inseam:
I simply can't imagine an improvement you could make in these pants, accept to include a belt perhaps. These are VERY breathable and VERY water proof, not to mention wind proof and tough. I have used them for a complete season in the Tetons, Yellowstone, Skiing and Shenandoah backpacking with great success. I have the matching jacket, and with the two (plus Gaiters) am protected from any weather eventuality. This stuff is light and strong - and again, VERY water proof. It out performs even my Goretex XPG I use for triathlon, which is honestly amazing.

Comments about REI Shuksan Pants with eVent Fabric - Men's 30" Inseam:
I bought these pants with the expectation that they would be good but to light weight for a cold windy day skiing. I was wrong !!
First day out on the slopes this year and it is 20 degrees, 60mph winds at an altitude of 9820 ft and it is snowing like crazy.
I am wearing these pants, REI wind blocker fleece liner. After about three runs I am sweating. I expected the next ride up the lift will be cold followed by skiing in wet clothes. Not so, the venting in the event products worked perfectly. Never got cold, wet and skied long than usual because I was so comfortable. The light weight design was also a big plus. Half the weight in clothes from last year, just as warm and no sweaty layers.
I don't care for the full length leg zippers. no cold air came in. The event products vent so well without unzipping I cant figure out how or why they are on the pants. Who either zips down from the waist or all the way up from the foot to vent ? If REI wants a zip vent along the side of the pants don't have it go all the way to the top and bottom. A side vent and a expanded cuff zipper might be nice. Also a little tight over my ski boots.

Comments about REI Shuksan Pants with eVent Fabric - Men's 30" Inseam:
Great pants, somehow they ripped on the side of my knee when I went out sledding but I was able to exchange it because of my REI membership. So, I don't know if they're that durable, but they are very waterproof & breathable & they fit nicely.
