The REI Torridon jacket combines the warmth of wool with the weather protection and breathability of a softshell. Take the Torridon on a trek, and the train as well.

Heathered wool face with a breathable inner laminate and nicely finished microfleece lining creates this beautiful Schoeller® fabric that blocks wind up to 55mph
Durable Water Repellent finish repels moisture and stains; 2-way stretch ensures comfortable movement
Adjustable hem, inner fleece cuffs and front zip’s stormflap block out cold
REI Torridon collar folds down or zips up for added warmth and the chin guard prevents skin abrasion

This coat has a very stylish trim cut, and attractive wool outer shell.
Warm in the 40s, though I'm more comfortable with a warm layer underneath; the trim cut doesn't allow thick layering.
Rain left my shoulders feeling cold, maybe even damp, but not too bad. Even after weeks of use in rainy weather, the coat looks new.

I often wear XL, but the L fits very well.

This jacket looks too nice to take hiking, and I'm planning to stick with the dry-clean only recommendation so I'm avoiding getting it dirty.

I've had several compliments on this jacket. Too bad it's not available anymore (as of Mar 2012), I'd buy another one in a different color just to have two.

I bought this jacket because I needed a mid-weight jacket that looked good enough to wear for just about any occasion, except for formal events, and would keep this aging body warm. So far, have worn it in mid 30 degree temps and I am very impressed! It really is good at blocking the wind while keeping me very comfortable. I am 5'-8", 130lbs and the "Small" fits me just fine. The jacket is very well made and I think it looks very nice. Even my "high-end clothing snob" co-worker liked it! All zippers work smoothly.

The look, feel, materials, and price were all precisely what I wanted, but the size S is cut HUGE! The sleeves nearly covered my hands, the hem was much too low, and I would have to gain 20 pounds to fill out the torso. Size S REI brand items usually fit me perfectly, so this jacket is definitely an outlier. I would buy 10 of these if the sizing were fixed!

My wife bought this jacket for me as I headed off for a two-week stint working in Minneapolis. Though the temps were on the warm side (for them - in November), I was NEVER cold with this jacket, and it proved to be stylish enough that, when coupled with other business-casual wear, I never felt out of place wearing it to, and around, a corporate setting.

I typically won't pay retail, but I know that REI branded products are a fair value and backed by REI for satisfaction and overall-quality. The only thing I kick myself about is that we went to REI just a short time after I could have gotten 20% off as a member. Oh well - this jacket will be a great investment over time for sure, and I'll test it even more when I return to Minneapolis in January.
