Comments about REI Trekking Pole Rubber Walking Tips - 12mm - Pair:

Komperdell aluminum trekking poles, and REI-branded Komperdell poles, come with two different tip styles. Many of the basic poles simply have a small metal plug, with or without a carbide button, inserted in the end of the metal bottom pole section. These poles require a rubber tip that is a little over three-eighths of an inch in diameter (0.4 inches or about 10 mm).

Many of the pricier poles have a four-inch plastic tip inserted over the metal tip. These are friction-fitted and can be found on the Internet if you look hard enough for about $20 a pair. They also extend the life of the poles--the unprotected metal tips wear terribly on coarse ground.

Obviously, these plastic tips are larger than the metal tip they fit over and require a larger rubber tip, about a half-inch in diameter (0.47 inches or about 12 mm). These are the tips that REI carries. I've found the smaller tips at a trading post named for a mountain range west of Reno.

The Komperdell tips are tapered for a very tight fit and I've yet to lose one, though I have worn some out.

Comments about REI Trekking Pole Rubber Walking Tips - 12mm - Pair:

I've used these tips (REI and Komperdell brands, which appear to be same) on my Komperdell poles for more than 15 years. I've occasionally replaced them when the tip wore through the rubber, but only after many, many miles of use. I think some of the negative comments may be due to confusion over tip protectors vs rubber walking tips. I've never had any rubber tips crack, split, or wear prematurely. They work great.

Comments about REI Trekking Pole Rubber Walking Tips - 12mm - Pair:

To start, this is false advertising. The Tips are made from Plastic, not rubber. Plastic does not grip the surface as well as rubber. Worse, the plastic does not "stretch" to go over the tip of your Pole. The result is that these things frequently "split" down the side just putting them on your Pole.

Leki makes actual Rubber Tips, and they seem to fit the REI (Komperdell) poles pretty well.

I bought these to protect the tips of my trekking poles. I got waylaid before I could use the poles and then when I went to use them these tips had split vertically just sitting on the tips without ever being used! Not what I expect of an REI product.

REI claims that these tips will fit Komperdell trekking poles. Well, in all fairness to REI, these tips may, in fact, fit some Komperdell trekking poles, but they DO NOT FIT the Komperdell poles I just purchased. That, naturally, renders them useless, for the purpose for which they are intended--the purpose for which they were purchased. Sent back. If you are near enough to an REI store to try them out before you buy, I would recommend doing so.

Comments about REI Trekking Pole Rubber Walking Tips - 12mm - Pair:

If you try to use the "tip protectors" instead of the "rubber tips" you will be quickly disappointed! The tip protectors are NOT FOR WALKING--simply for transporting your poles safely so the sharp metal tips don't jab you or poke through your pack. They work great for that, but are NOT intended for use on the road or trail.

However, the rubber tips themselves are a "must have" for general hiking/walking, and I'm surprised that they aren't included with the poles to start with. I found on the AT that the steel tips either skitter across smooth surfaces, get stuck between rocks, or sink too far into soft dirt. But the rubber tips them useful in most trail conditions and on asphalt--and make them much quieter, too.

I never liked using trekking poles until I put these tips on them. They work great and last a long time. Don't buy the poles without them.

they tore before I realized it. certainly can't be used to walk with, and are only minimally useful for tip protectors. Do not fit the poles they are supposed to fit I guess. rubber is thin too.

I see another reviewer had a problem, but I've used these for years and never had them wear through, even using my old ones all the stone steps of the Inca Trail. I shared the extra new ones I had on the trip with others who wore through theirs. Its the best buy of the tips.

These are actually nothing more than tip protectors. Used them once for some fitness walking of not more than 4 km and the metal tip on my REI trekking poles was worn through. Returned to the store and am now trying the LEKI fitness walking tips. Bite the bullet and but the expensive tips!
