Comments about DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w GPS:
I purchased this unit when it came with the SPOT! The main reason I got it was because it could track and send messages with the SPOT. The spot was recalled and it took over a week to get my new Spot and Delorme blamed Spot and Spot blamed Delorme it was a little frustrating. The box says the unit is Mac compatible but once you get it home you will realize that the unit is but the software is NOT Mac compatible, I ended up pitting windows on my Mac becuase I wanted the SPOT still! The battery life on this unit is really really bad my Dad has a Garmin that had regular energizer batteries in it and it out lasted the PN-60w with Lithium Batterys. The Delorme went throught 2 sets of lithiums to his one set of standard energizers and I had my screen on less than him and my screen was not lit up as much as the Garmins! After 6 months lots of the pixels on the screen started to go out also. The screen is not clear enough to use SAT imagery that delorme sells! I should have given up on this unit and returned it along time ago rather than trying every thing just to have a little piece of mind with the SPOT! I will probaly be getting a new Garmin and a SPOT that will link to my Android phone to replace this very out dated battery hog of a GPS...

Comments about DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w GPS:
Good Things:
1) The maps already have trail maps already built into them. Anytime I have been hiking on a trail in a national forest or a national park, the trail is already preloaded on the map. There is no forethought required, which is nice. However, trails which are not on USFS land or not in a national park are generally not preloaded on the map (in my experience).
2) The maps can give you driving directions to addresses or POI just like any ordinary car gps would. It uses the data collected by the NAVTEQ corporation just like all Garmin or TomTom units.
3) The unit is rugged. The unit impacted a rock at about 20mph and kept gps signal without a problem and the case is still in good condition. I have also used it in heavy rain without any water damage or malfunction.
4) I actually did get lost when I was running in Salt Lake City and I used this to find my way back to the car. It performs this basic function well.
5) The unit gets gps signal under a certain amount of tree cover and in canyons of the wasatch range pretty well, although it is less accurate.
Bad Things:
1) The battery life with NiMH batteries is only about 2 to 3.5 hours. It goes into a power save mode, which helps a bit, but not much. I just try to plan accordingly and pack 4 or 6 extra rechargeable batteries, just in case. I have not tested Lithium batteries, but they are supposed to last longer.
2) The maps only include US/Canada/Mexico and they are bulky. I bought a 32GB SD card and I still can't fit all 50 states on it. Also, entering addresses for Salt Lake City can be difficult, but this is the case with my smartphone's GPS as well.
3) The user interface was pretty simple for me to use, but someone else picked it up and started to touch the screen like it was an iPhone and I had to explain that it used buttons. Some minimal amount of reading the user's manual is helpful or you can randomly press buttons for 15 to 20 minutes to figure it out (I did the latter). People just expect everything to be totally intuitive these days without instructions.
4) The SPOT Connect service that you can use with this thing totally sucks, I had a really negative experience with their satellite service not providing service where their coverage map claimed. Consider the InReach as the best option for this device (although I have not tried that service yet).

Comments about DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w GPS:
I've been using the Delorme PN-60W with SPOT for almost a year now with no problems. The screen is small but it's performance more than makes up for it !! It takes a while to learn all the different settings and how to use the mapping software. The Li-ion batteries seemed to last about a 14-18 hours and after going through several packs of Li-ion batteries I went with rechargeables. 2700mAh Nickel-Metal Hydride were the ticket. This is a great rugged GPS and is very accurate. I wish the buttons were illuminated for use at night.

Comments about DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w GPS:
Got this unit thinking it would help me find trails in the backcountry. The software did that, but the GPS itself doesn't go that far beyond the capabilities of my iPhone (with Gaia GPS app). I had compared this to the Garmin 62sc + mapset before going for this.
Pros:
-$150 less than Garmin when you factor in map costs
inReach communicator use when out of cell phone -service (garmin doesn't have anything comparable)
-allows charging via USB to unit directly (Garmin can't do this either), so those geeks that have solar USB chargers could theoretically charge this on the trail.
- Powerful, though sometimes hard to use software set w/good maps included. I did find the SW was annoying in that it couldn't make a route that included both roads and trails, only one or the other. That's ridiculous.
I ended up returning the unit despite these pros. To me, I couldn't justify carrying the extra 7oz on the trail when I'm carrying my iPhone anyways, and there's a great app for navigating (without cell service available).
