by fromOpens like a snap. I love this knife. It is very solid and well put together. The handle is made out of some sort of special plastic-like material. While I don't doubt the durability or functionality of this material, it isn't as beautiful as natural materials. That's the reason for four instead of five stars.

by fromGreat balance of all things This is great medium weight knife. Benchmade sells a lot lighter, and there are a lot heavier knives. I wouldn't use this knife to live in the forest but I wouldn't go there without it. Its a great middle ground of weight and size. The assisted opening spring gives it a wonderful feel and if i buy another folder from Benchmade that would be on of the requirements for it to have. The pocket clip is sturdy as you can get with out doing something crazy. I bought the knife to use at my work in a commercial kitchen to open receiving shipments and blade will stand up to cardboard all day long. It has a good grip I just with there was some sort of rubberizing on the finger holds but anything they would put on would flake off so most likely that is for best.

by fromExcellent! I'm completely in love with this knife. For 30 years I've been using the same knife and refused to upgrade. I finally broke down and bought the Benchmade 580S Barrage because I wanted something lighter weight, a knife that I could work with one hand, good ergonomics, high quality and nice esthetics. This knife has it all. In the short time that I've owned it, it has already seen a fair amount of use and so far is a pleasure to work with. All moving parts have perfect fit -- no excess free play anywhere. My only complaint is that there were no instructions on how to open it without cutting myself (I'd never worked one of these spring assisted knives). It comes out of the box sharp as a razor. Worth the money.

by fromGreat knife-very sharp out of the box I have owned this knife for several weeks. It is light weight and very sharp. Not crazy about the plastic grips but overall an excellent knife.

by fromGreat knife Great knife for my uses. Have used it for recreational camping, extended backpacking trips, long mountain biking trips, rock climbing, etc. Have yet to encounter any issues. Easy to clean. Locking mechanism is awesome. Relatively lightweight. You shouldn't need much more in a knife.

by fromSolidly made Figured it was time to get a Benchmade, knowing that if you want the best quality, that's what you go for. The price is also not bad and seems to have come down from what I remember them costing. The knife is well made with 154CM steel, so it will hold an edge fairly well, but may not sharpen up as much as a higher carbon content blade. For my uses, this is fine. I would have liked to see the tanto style blade shape, but the REI that I purchased this at did not have one. The spring assist mechanism is very good and doesn't have any play, the blade lock is easy to use and not tight, and the lock out/lock in mechanism, once you get the hang of it, is very useful. The handle is a nice contour, but the material feels a bit cheap to me. My last knife was metal with a G10 texture, so I may just not be used to this. It looks like it is starting to pick up scuffs/scrapes a bit already, but hopefully not too much. Overall the knife is very nice, and for the price would be very hard to beat.

by fromNIce I decided to expand my benchmade collection and landed on the Barrage. This knife lived up to benchmade's reputation. In all honesty its a little scary at first. The force with which the nitrous assist shot out the blade was intimidating at first but you learn to love it. This is a bigger knife and would be a little much for every day use but for hiking camping etc it seems to be the perfect knife.

by fromEverything Ya Need Always go to a store to buy a knife, test it out. Heard that the spring has problems on these models. [...] Benchmade has a great warranty; lifetime. If you look at all the materials that were put in to create this knife.. you'll see its just made for any condition. 154CM is a great steel, strong, keeps its edge and is expensive. The grip. Made out of Valox plastic which is made of thermoplastic polyester resins are semi-crystalline... and is resistant to a variety of chemicals including aliphatic hydrocarbons, petrol, oils and greases, dilute acids and bases, detergents and most aqueous salt solutions. (did some research on the internet).Overall great knife. Cant say anything bad about it, look forward to taking it on my next camping trip, if this snow ever goes away.
