The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.
Rated5out of5byPatreezyfromSolidly madeFigured it was time to get a Benchmade, knowing that if you want the best quality, that's what you go for. The price is also not bad and seems to have come down from what I remember them costing.
The knife is well made with 154CM steel, so it will hold an edge fairly well, but may not sharpen up as much as a higher carbon content blade. For my uses, this is fine. I would have liked to see the tanto style blade shape, but the REI that I purchased this at did not have one. The spring assist mechanism is very good and doesn't have any play, the blade lock is easy to use and not tight, and the lock out/lock in mechanism, once you get the hang of it, is very useful.
The handle is a nice contour, but the material feels a bit cheap to me. My last knife was metal with a G10 texture, so I may just not be used to this. It looks like it is starting to pick up scuffs/scrapes a bit already, but hopefully not too much.
Overall the knife is very nice, and for the price would be very hard to beat.

Rated4out of5byKennethJMoosefromOpens like a snap.I love this knife. It is very solid and well put together. The handle is made out of some sort of special plastic-like material. While I don't doubt the durability or functionality of this material, it isn't as beautiful as natural materials. That's the reason for four instead of five stars.

Rated5out of5byThoreauAZfromUsual Benchmade QualityI mainly bought this knife to use up a 20% coupon before it expired, and I'm glad I did.
Having bought (and subsequently returned) the smaller Mini Barrage, I wasn't sure if I wanted another assisted opening Axis model. In the case of the Mini, the grip just wasn't large enough or textured enough to feel right when that internal spring shot the blade open.
Fortunately, the larger size of the full size Barrage eliminates this issue for me. It's comfortable to carry, easy to open, and doesn't feel like it's gonna fly out of my hand when opening.
Being my 4th Benchmade knife purchased over the years (not counting the Mini Barrage) the quality is exactly what I expected. Very solid lockup with no play thanks to the Axis mechanism, razor sharp out of the box, and it feels solid and substantial in the hand.
About the only downside to the knife is that it's such a nice knife I'm having a hard time putting it through much abuse. That'll surely change in time though.

Rated5out of5bycqboveefromGreat knifeGreat knife for my uses. Have used it for recreational camping, extended backpacking trips, long mountain biking trips, rock climbing, etc. Have yet to encounter any issues. Easy to clean. Locking mechanism is awesome. Relatively lightweight. You shouldn't need much more in a knife.

Rated5out of5byfredbytefromI'm in love!I'm in love with an inanimate object. And that object is the Benchmade 580S Barrage Knife. It's a beauty to behold in my hand. Comfortable, elegant, simple, sharp, slim, and just the right heft. The AXIS spring assist opening sprints the blade out faster than an eyeblink. It works much better than those folders where you have to flick your wrist. The secondary safety on the top of the spine, as Dane Allison reviewed, either keeps the blade locked open or locked closed. I can't see using the secondary safety to keep the blade locked closed, but I can envision where it would be a good idea to keep the blade locked open more securely. A likely scenario for the latter is when you are using the point to stab an ice block to make chunks. Thanks also to Dane for mentioning the Rainbow of California Large Knife Case. Though, the Barrage is a folder, I trust the clip to hold the knife in place in my pants or shorts pocket only when I'm walking, not when I'm jogging or bicycling. In the latter two forms of exercise, I'm moving my legs too rapidly (well, maybe not so fast these days, as I'm old and slow now). Moreover, when I'm bicycling, the knife may even be horizontal or angled clip downward, possibly sliding out of my pocket to be gone forever. What a loss that would be! (Not only in terms of money, but also love. Who knows how long Benchmade will manufacture the Barrage?) The Barrage fits the Rainbow of California Large Knife Case perfectly, a snug fit. I plan to bicycle with the knife case attached to the waist strap of a fanny pack. The knife will be secure, and easily accessible. Oh, one more thing, the knife cut through cardboard like it was butter.

Rated5out of5byJohn SpofromGreat knife-very sharp out of the boxI have owned this knife for several weeks. It is light weight and very sharp. Not crazy about the plastic grips but overall an excellent knife.

Rated5out of5byDaneAlisonfromProud Owner Of BenchmadeThe best knife I have owned. I spent hours online searching for the best company, and then for the best model of knife. This knife was the perfect match. The size is large enough for most every task besides hacking down a tree, and small enough to clip inside a pocket. The AXIS assist opening mechanism is powerful, and when the blade is closed, the force that goes into opening the blade is instead keeping it closed, so the blade is not always under tension to spring open. The secondary lock on the knife is like a gun safety, preventing it from being unintentionally opened in a pocket, or from snapping closed on a finger during use.
I recommend purchasing the large Rainbow Of California sheath that REI carries, as it fits perfectly, and allows you to carry it on a belt or TAC-TIED to a pack.

Rated5out of5bypastramifromExcellent!I'm completely in love with this knife. For 30 years I've been using the same knife and refused to upgrade. I finally broke down and bought the Benchmade 580S Barrage because I wanted something lighter weight, a knife that I could work with one hand, good ergonomics, high quality and nice esthetics. This knife has it all. In the short time that I've owned it, it has already seen a fair amount of use and so far is a pleasure to work with. All moving parts have perfect fit -- no excess free play anywhere. My only complaint is that there were no instructions on how to open it without cutting myself (I'd never worked one of these spring assisted knives). It comes out of the box sharp as a razor. Worth the money.
