Comments about Benchmade 580S Barrage Knife:
Great knife for my uses. Have used it for recreational camping, extended backpacking trips, long mountain biking trips, rock climbing, etc. Have yet to encounter any issues. Easy to clean. Locking mechanism is awesome. Relatively lightweight. You shouldn't need much more in a knife.

Comments about Benchmade 580S Barrage Knife:
I'm in love with an inanimate object. And that object is the Benchmade 580S Barrage Knife. It's a beauty to behold in my hand. Comfortable, elegant, simple, sharp, slim, and just the right heft. The AXIS spring assist opening sprints the blade out faster than an eyeblink. It works much better than those folders where you have to flick your wrist. The secondary safety on the top of the spine, as Dane Allison reviewed, either keeps the blade locked open or locked closed. I can't see using the secondary safety to keep the blade locked closed, but I can envision where it would be a good idea to keep the blade locked open more securely. A likely scenario for the latter is when you are using the point to stab an ice block to make chunks. Thanks also to Dane for mentioning the Rainbow of California Large Knife Case. Though, the Barrage is a folder, I trust the clip to hold the knife in place in my pants or shorts pocket only when I'm walking, not when I'm jogging or bicycling. In the latter two forms of exercise, I'm moving my legs too rapidly (well, maybe not so fast these days, as I'm old and slow now). Moreover, when I'm bicycling, the knife may even be horizontal or angled clip downward, possibly sliding out of my pocket to be gone forever. What a loss that would be! (Not only in terms of money, but also love. Who knows how long Benchmade will manufacture the Barrage?) The Barrage fits the Rainbow of California Large Knife Case perfectly, a snug fit. I plan to bicycle with the knife case attached to the waist strap of a fanny pack. The knife will be secure, and easily accessible. Oh, one more thing, the knife cut through cardboard like it was butter.

I have owned this knife for several weeks. It is light weight and very sharp. Not crazy about the plastic grips but overall an excellent knife.

Comments about Benchmade 580S Barrage Knife:
The best knife I have owned. I spent hours online searching for the best company, and then for the best model of knife. This knife was the perfect match. The size is large enough for most every task besides hacking down a tree, and small enough to clip inside a pocket. The AXIS assist opening mechanism is powerful, and when the blade is closed, the force that goes into opening the blade is instead keeping it closed, so the blade is not always under tension to spring open. The secondary lock on the knife is like a gun safety, preventing it from being unintentionally opened in a pocket, or from snapping closed on a finger during use.
I recommend purchasing the large Rainbow Of California sheath that REI carries, as it fits perfectly, and allows you to carry it on a belt or TAC-TIED to a pack.

Comments about Benchmade 580S Barrage Knife:
I'm completely in love with this knife. For 30 years I've been using the same knife and refused to upgrade. I finally broke down and bought the Benchmade 580S Barrage because I wanted something lighter weight, a knife that I could work with one hand, good ergonomics, high quality and nice esthetics. This knife has it all. In the short time that I've owned it, it has already seen a fair amount of use and so far is a pleasure to work with. All moving parts have perfect fit -- no excess free play anywhere. My only complaint is that there were no instructions on how to open it without cutting myself (I'd never worked one of these spring assisted knives). It comes out of the box sharp as a razor. Worth the money.

Comments about Benchmade 580S Barrage Knife:
This is great medium weight knife. Benchmade sells a lot lighter, and there are a lot heavier knives. I wouldn't use this knife to live in the forest but I wouldn't go there without it. Its a great middle ground of weight and size. The assisted opening spring gives it a wonderful feel and if i buy another folder from Benchmade that would be on of the requirements for it to have. The pocket clip is sturdy as you can get with out doing something crazy. I bought the knife to use at my work in a commercial kitchen to open receiving shipments and blade will stand up to cardboard all day long. It has a good grip I just with there was some sort of rubberizing on the finger holds but anything they would put on would flake off so most likely that is for best.

Comments about Benchmade 580S Barrage Knife:
Extremely well made knife. This is my second Benchmade and I was not at all surprised with the quality. The blade is made of exceptional quality steel and the handle is of equal quality. I have beaten the hell out of this knife and the paint on the pocket clip is the only visible sign of age. The blade stays sharp and is relatively easy to sharpen. The only downside, if it is a downside, is the fact that the Axis locking mechanism tends to collect dust and grime, but with a Q Tip, it's easy to clean. Overall, very satisfied with this knife. American made is the way to go. If you are buying a knife and want a quality larger sized folder that is durable as hell, buy the Barrage. And the reviewer whose locking mechanism failed to function correctly must've received a lemon, because there is no way a Benchmade would fail like that. Between REI and Benchmade, I'm confident that the issue was taken care of, as both companies have the best customer service available today. Buying a Benchmade from REI is one of the best decisions one could make.
