Comments about Novara Duster Single-Speed Coaster 20'' Bike - 2010:

This kid's bike is a great value for it's entry level pricetag. It's relatively lightweight when compared to the heavier freestyle and BMX bikes sold at the big box stores like [...] Don't be fooled by this bikes subtle blue color, it doesn't have flashy neon or metallic paint. I've owned bikes my whole life and take pride spending a few dollars extra for a quality bike that will outlast more inexpensive ones. It's the ol' saying you get what you pay for. While this isn't a $500 skatepark bike it is a perfect upgrade from a smaller 16" or 18" bike. Our little guy is 8 years old. The mountain bike style handbar keeps him at a comfortable yet agressive position for most types of riding. The coaster brake was a plus because at 7 and 8 years old most kids need to focus on manuevering and control. Most bikes in this price range use handbrakes and a freewheel which I personally think is a dangerous combination for the younger kids - they can find themselves heading for disaster (or a crash) when having to turn and brake simultaneously. The footbrake allows them to use the braking control which they've grown up with while focusing on the control of their new larger sized bike.I actually had purchased a Mongoose BMX bike for $120 that was in my trunk when I decided to stop by REI on the way home. I figured an extra [$] difference for the Duster would be worth it. I returned the Mongoose on my home while the fully assembled Duster rode in the backseat. The Mongoose was bigger and bulkier so it had to be disassembled to fit in my BMW trunk! I can't stress enough how important a well balanced bike is for little kids and the Duster is a good fit. Kid bikes with all sorts of gadgetry and braking gear equal a heavy bike that takes the fun out of tooling around the neighborhood or picking it up every time they take a spill.This is a top notch basic first 20" bike. No regrets. Do your own homework and you'll agree.
