        I audition meals at home before suffering them on the trail. In this instance, I'm very glad I did, because I was unwilling to choke this down.

        I prepared the meal exactly as directed, including allowing it to hydrate in the pouch. The end result was a mashed potato paste-based stew of chewy chunks of unknown origin. It smelled like canned dog food (not in a good way), and this is from someone that'll happily tuck into a cold can of Turkey Spam. I searched the morass for evidence of chicken, but it was a fruitless effort. After forcing down five bites, I gave up and tossed it out.

        I have one more pouch of this last ditch meal, and during a disaster, I'll use it to signal that my supply of food has run out. I'm used to dehydrated meals lacking appealing flavor and texture, but this belongs with the Mountain House Noodles & Chicken meal I expelled on Mount Quandary last year.

        Do not buy this meal.

        Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

          Backpacker's Pantry makes lots of good freeze-dried meals, and this is one of my favorites. It has a range of textures, tastes really good, and is warm and comforting. True, one isn't used to having these things so evenly mixed together, but given the technology there's no way around that.
