Comments about Outdoor Products Gem Tea Stick Infuser:
I purchased the Gem because I cannot drink coffee and have been an avid loose leaf tea drinker for many years. The alternatives for hot beverage preparation available at the time of purchase were the french press canisters and the stainless steel infuser. I felt the french press was very large considering the limits to its function vs. its cost, and the stainless steel infuser's strainer holes were too large. While many people drink tea with larger leaves, I generally keep a variety of kinds of leaves and often infusers with large holes are a poor defense to rogue miniature leaves and it sullies my drink. The Gem had an awesome fine screen which is the best way to combat the escapee leaves. My concern was that the Gem would not seal up as well around its sides and leaves would fall out of the cracks but that is not the case, the Gem holds them in quite well by creating a fairly resilient seal. The shape of the Gem is helpful, the "trough" on the inside of the gem is a great measuring tool, in general filling the trough just to the top of its sidewalls is enough loose tea to brew one cup, eliminating the need for measuring spoons, etc. It is a little difficult to get the tea into the though, it does not work well as a spoon, but if these are the things that we are most worried about in our lives you should probably just sit back and enjoy our tea and shut up.
Since my kit is housed in a hard pannier of my motorcycle, sometimes gear shifts and gets knocked around quite a bit, so my only concern with the Gem is that I worry that the screen itself will get bumped into or dented by other things in my kit, pulling the screen away from its plastic frame. This has not happened yet because I have been very careful, but it does not seem to be the tightest connection or seal to its frame so it seems that even cleaning it could possibly break the screen away and tea would leak all over the place through the hole the next time it was used. I think the best thing would be to find a canister or protective tube or something to put the Gem into so that it will not get damaged during transport, as it does not seem to be the most durable, but at the same time, most other people's kits will probably not be as rough of an environment as the one I put my things into and it does not seem to show wear so presumably as long as it is not damaged it would last a long time. It may be a little stronger than I think, but for the money I paid I am not interested in testing its limits, I would just rather handle it with caution.
Overall, this thing is awesome! I own 3 of them, one for my kit, one for home, and one for the office. If one wears out I will replace it with the same thing.
