I was looking for a bike bag for my 12 mile daily commute. I needed something that was not too big, but big enough to fit my gear, and very waterproof.

I first bought the Seattle Sports Aquaknot 1800. This thing could double as a bivy sac. It is huge. Sent it back. I decided to spend the extra bones on the Ortlieb Packman 2 and so far so good. Here is my review...

The bag is very well constructed. The outer feel is like cordura and the inside is the slick waterproof coating. This will make it more abrasion resistant over time. The straps are very well attached and the roll top buckles are well engineered. The Roll top buckle inserts are fixed to the pack so you can buckle the top with one hand...clever!

The size is about right. I can carry rainpants, bike jacket, small towel, small first aid kit, Fivefingers, gloves, hat, and a thick fleece jacket for winter. I wouldn't mind about 100 more cubic inches inside, but I can squeeze in what I need.

The pack is very comfortable to wear, and on a hot day the raised pads on the back make it so I actually feel air moving across my back! Very nice. That way I just end up with sweat marks in the pattern of the pads and not my whole back. It looks much cooler.

My only complaint about this pack is the pocket on the front. Why on earth is there a non-waterproof pocket on a pack that is specifically made to be waterproof? Makes no sense to me. This really limits what I can put in this pocket. I can do gel packs, first aid kit, lip balm, etc., but I cannot put in my iPhone or headphones. That is pretty annoying. It would also be nice to have another place to attach a bike light of some sort.

The pack is wider than your average daypack so I can't really see around it with my helmet mount mirror. I have to turn my head to the side and then I can see around it just fine. I am good with that.

All in all it is a great pack!

I was preparing for my second rafting expedition of the Rio Platano in Honduras and bought this bag for the hike to the river's headwaters and the two week descent of the river. It rained two thirds of the time and the bag was perfect for my camera gear, electronics and all my daily necessities. Tough construction and easy to use with organizer interior pockets. Really waterproof!

Got this backpack not too long ago. I already have been through a few light downpours with it and it kept everything nice and dry. The pads on the back are great, no more removing my backpack with a shirt stuck to my back from sweat. It's also lightweight and very comfortable. Only complaints are the chest strap is too thin with zero padding. I was expecting something a little more heavy duty. Also the side straps are too short to attach really anything and what's with the non-waterproof pockets on a waterproof backpack? Other than that it's a great bag. Wish REI would stock the other colors that they make this bag in though.
