After 2 days of 12hrs/day in the summer NJ sun, it was only able to charge <30% of my Samsung smartphone. Pathetic. This charger requires 3-5 days of plentiful summer sun to even reach barely 50% charge of my smartphone. Maybe the intense heat the unit experiences degrades its internal battery's performance. Either way, it doesn't have the power to do the job in a realistic timeframe. Do not recommend at all for anyone without 6-10 days to charge your phone.

I intended to use this product while camping & hunting. I am away from any power source for at least a week. I had placed this in direct sunlight for two days - and it never fully charged. Mostly sunny on the 3rd day, and it would not take a charge. I've attempted to charge my iPhone, and the two days worth got me about 20% battery charge.
I'm not sure I will use this ever.

I wanted a small charger for backpacking to charge my Android phone if it needed extra power. I had lots of problems keeping the connection from the battery pack to my phone. Every few minutes I had to look at it and jiggle it to make it connect. It was very, very slow to charge my phone from the battery pack. Most of the night and it did very little. I wanted to like this devise but ended up taking it back.

I bought this before I went to Afghanistan and was hoping to use it for my Ipod or whatever and it took what seemed like forever to charge in the sun (you have to reposition about every 45min for direct sunlight) and it charges best only during peak hours of sunlight.

Service and delivery comments:

Customer service was extremely helpful. Although the product itself wasn't that great, when it was destroyed in an IED blast they sent me a new one for free. I will stick with the company but maybe try out a different product.

I got the Solio charger for emergency use. I get deployed to places where there may not be any power. I also camp and it will be useful in those places. I will be able to charge my Iphone anywhere I go. I think it will serve me well. I have used it a few times and it has worked fine.

Used product to charge iPhone with special adaptors. Poor charging performance--too long and inconsistent charge. Returned unit for another one with company--nice folks, but unit continued to charge only 1/3 of iPhone's battery. Solar charger not strong enough to charge internal Solio battery even in summer while outside all day. Second charger eventually would not charge at all, even on USB port. Overall great idea, poor execution.

I picked up this unit to charge my droid 2 cell phone on backpacking trips. The unit did charge the phone, however the phone did not recognize that it was being charged via charging indicator (I realized it was charging when the battery percentage increased). I thought nothing of it, as I had read that sometimes motorola devices are "picky" when it comes to aftermarket charging equipment. Unfortunately the reason the charging indicator did not function, was because this unit had damaged the USB connection hardware. This was verified by attempts connect the phone via USB to a PC, and connecting the phone to its standard motorola charger. I contacted Solio about what happened and they said contact motorola. I'm a little disappointed about the loss of this function in my phone. It could be argued that you gamble any time you use devices that aren't specifically made for each other (i.e. motorola brand charger with motorola phone), and in this case I certainly lost that gamble. Hopefully others have better luck.[...]

I did not buy this through REI (or else I would have already returned it)I bought it, had to special order the tip for my phone - ok. Used to that with iphone. But even with the new tip, wouldn't work. Company sent a replacement cord[...]) but I STILL can't get it to charge a thing. Nice concept. Also the directions are only cartoons-no words.
