This makes a great gear bag for car/location/light hiking. I'd give it 5 stars, but it's just not a fast entry bag and for major hikes it's too bulky, but with good reason. Excellent protection for gear and you can add on a mesh bag for water bottle or extra gear/lens cases on the sides. I use one on each side. This makes it a bit more user friendly. NOT water resistant, so I bought a rain "coat" for a back pack (comparable size) and keep it attached to my exterior bungies along with my clothing gear.The zippers are good and the lumbar pack part of this bag is exceptional. I have the NON camera bag that is the same size and I have used it in Europe.If this bag had a quick access clip system to access gear I'd never use anything else. It holds a Canon 7D with 24-105L attached, 100-400L lens, 1.4xtender, 50mm lens in the main compartment. Misc lens pen, compass, etc in the exterior pocket, which should have been gusseted for more room.To keep weight down used a large OR insulated water bottle holder attached on one side and a lowepro mesh utility holder on the other side.You need at least one cross strap for stability with a heavy load in this lumbar pack, or the strapettes, which for a "C" note should have been included, or at least discounted.I have owned this bag for a year and it holds up well. I like Mountain Smith gear and I have used it well. Again, do get some kind of rain protection as none is provided and it's NOT rain resistant.I also use a holster rig with this unit, and yes I feel like a pack mule at times and probably look like one, but having this lumbar pack saves my shoulder and helps keep my center of gravity lower for scrambling up trails etc.I really suggest that you bring your photo gear into REI and pack it into this bag then walk around with it. [...] it will give you an idea of what this great pack can do.
