by fromBest of the options but still not great I've been using a roof rack for many years but since we shuttle a lot and many of us have 20mm fork bikes putting them on the roof rack is a huge pain. So I wanted to get a good stable hitch rack to put on my blazer that I could still get to off-road trails with. It seems the T2 is the best of the mediocre options. They are all basically a rip off for $400+ First the main 8mm button head bolts they use are worthless, they are soft and the heads strip easily. I replaced them with cap screw 8mm grade 8 bolts. Second the T2 costs you a lot of off road clearance because the unit that sticks out of the hitch does so for 18-24" meaning it can drag on the ground easily in steep driveways etc. compared to say the Yakima holdup that curves up and away from the hitch. The T2 is nice because the fold up mechanism is solid, and the tray positions are adjustable so most everyone can set the trays up for their bikes. It's solid and stable and the hitch tightening bolt helps a lot. Thule includes the hitch lock and locks for the arms (though locking the arms does nothing for bike security). The rear wheel holders have way too much slop on the rail and the rear wheel strap is not attached to the rack so it's easy to loose them (not to mention annoying) because whenever you release the rear wheel strap it falls off the rack to the ground.More concerning is the reported failures of the rack. The adjustable bike tray clamps do not hold the main bar as solid as they should. If you have them too loose they slip, if you have them too tight it flexes the clamp and it looses contact with the main beam and can slip. In fact no torque value was found that I could not get a bike tray to slide up and down the main beam by wiggling the tray. (If you search on Thule T2 failure you'll find a video of someone who had their bike and tray fall off the main beam due to this) Thule has since put a little screw on the end of the main beam in the hopes the tray can't slide off, I replaced this with a larger bolt because I don't think that little screw would stop a tray especially if it was loose. I further took things into my own hands and once I found a good position for the trays drilled and bolted them in place through the main beam so they cannot fail. All these style of hitch racks have their various issues, the Holdup is nice but if it does not fit your bikes there's no tray adjustability and it's not as stable as the T2 but has much more off road clearance. I just don't think that for over $400 a person should have to replace bolts and further secure trays to eliminate the possibility of them falling off. [@] has a lot more on this issue as well, while rare it does happen and I certainly don't want my expensive bike on it when it does.The correct price for these things should be about $200. $400+ is close to getting you towers, bars, faring, and 2 bike trays on a roof rack that will be much more stable and versatile. I'd still say it was not a bad product but the poor construction at that price is just not acceptable. The only reason I'd recommend the product is if a person really wanted/needed a hitch rack as it's the best of the hitch options out there.

by fromGreat, but not perfect rack. I own both the Thule T2+2 and the Yakima HoldUp+2 for some time now, and I prefer the Thule more. The Thule is more robust, has a better locking mechanism, has a stronger main pivot, and a backup through-pin if the main lever keeping the bike rack up fails. The main con for me is that the lever arm is *just* a tad short. It's a bit tricky fitting a large-volume 29er front wheel under the lever arm. If they made it an inch longer, it'd be golden. Also, in 4-bike configuration, the last 2 bikes are a bit low. Not a problem for an SUV, but a problem for a minivan/wagon. They should have the bikes *just* a bit higher, especially the +2 section. For those who are deciding between a hitch-rack & a roof-rack, there's no comparison. Hitch rack, all the way! It's easier to load the bikes, it's quieter, and more fuel-efficient. You do have to watch out while backing up with a hitch rack, but you also have to watch out for low-overhangs with a roof rack. And if you do decide to go with a hitch rack, the Thule is the better one.

Just got this rack today, it was easy to build/install, have not taken my bike on a long trip yet, but it did great holding my old mountain bike on my "T2 Testing Ride", mostly just moderate speed over speed bumps, high speed corners, fast stops. I now feel safe strapping my carbon road bike down and not even worrying about it. I installed this on my Toyota Tacoma, but it also fits my wife's FJ Cruiser and will still fold up, It touches the rear spare tire cover, but it works. Overall I am satisified with this rack thus far and think it was worth the sale price of[$]

by fromBest Hitch Rack on the Market Another great Thule product. Works great even on long road trips at 80+ mph. Drove from San Diego, CA to Asheville, NC without either of my two bikes shifting along the way. Rack does scrape on steep driveways though so try to enter those driveways carefully. Rack is close to 70 lbs but this may account for its stability on road.

by fromWorth it if you travel with your bike The Thule rep was actually at REI when we bought the bike rack. And he was very informative, [...] We were told that putting the rack together is really the most difficult part. We also had to make sure we installed the correct size hitch on the car (car did not come with hitch). Installing the hitch on the car made this more costly, but we use the rack almost every weekend during good weather.For use - it is so easy to load your bikes onto the rack. Downside if you keep the rack on the car (because it is heavy and not convenient to continuously take on and off the car), it is bulky and you have to unfold the rack every time you want to get into the truck of the vehicle.

by fromStablility and safety for 2 bikes I have been using this rack for 2 years now, first on a jeep Grand Cherokee and now on a Dodge Ram Van B250. I love the sturdiness and stability of the rack. SETUP: I bought it already built from a bike store so I don't know how much DIY is required to put it together but it's doesn't seems very complex. It required a big size hitch housing (class III or higher). The rack is quite heavy and it can be delicate to slide it in place alone. Once it's in place, a simple screw is securing everything. USAGE: It can't be more simple to load/unload bikes on the rack. I carry a mountain bike and a road bike all the time. I had to remove my spare wheel from the back of my van as it was in the way of the rack when folded away. I'm afraid to drive around with the rack lowered and no bikes on it, in case some distracted driver would ram into it because they didn't see it. I like the fact that my bikes are very secured and don't swing around on the rack. They are protected from road aggression as they are behind my car. I can enter underground parking, unlike roof racks. CONCLUSION: I'm very happy with my purchase and love the rack.

by fromGlad I bought the T2 I agonized over weather or not I should spend the money on this until I watched someone loading their bikes on a lesser rack. I decided it was worth the investment because I would use the bikes more not because the rack was worth it. It is a breeze to load a bike and there is no nagging feeling of is it secure? The rack and loaded bikes are rock solid.

by fromFits the FJ I was looking for a bike rack that met certain criteria. Namely, that it secured a bike well, was a hitch mounted rack, was well designed and made, and most importantly, fit the dynamics of an FJ Cruiser (i.e. provided access to a swing-open rear door and folded up even though there is a spare tire on the back door). This rack ticks all the boxes, especially with regards to fitting the FJ. The bike sits nice and securely in the wheel sleeve and is well supported by the arm the extends over the front wheel - I feel much more comfortable using this type of rack as opposed to letting your bike dangle and swing around like you do with the other types. The rack is well made using good materials, you can tell by the weight of the thing. On the design front, it's also pretty good. The only thing I noticed which I think could be improved is the strap that secures the rear wheel. Normally you'd expect one end of the strap to be connected permanently to the rack, and the other end to be the end you adjust depending on the size of the tire. It's not. Both ends can be disconnected and unless you remember to strap it down properly before you drive off, it could be easily lost. I can already see myself on the phone to Thule asking for replacements. Apart from that, it's all good. And most importantly for me, it fits the FJ perfectly. In fact, it almost looks like it was designed specifically for vehicles with a spare tire at the rear. When it's folded up, it leaves just a very small, precise looking gap behind the tire. When its folded down, you can open the door enough to throw your cr4p in the back. And if you've got something large which requires you to open the door extra wide, then you can extend the the tilt downwards for extra opening space. The only thing I can't comment on at this stage is the durability. I've only just installed it. Which, by the way, was a breeze. I'm looking forward to years of trouble free biking.
