Previously all BD gear I have used has been 4+ stars. I like most BD gear. The Brightness to weight ratio was why I bought it. My three gripes were;
1 It turned off with minor jarring! That was the deal killer and why I returned it.
2 It sat flat against my head, it was not contoured like my Petzl.
3 It would have been even brighter if there was a mode where all three LEDs lit.

Hopefully this was just a bad apple and I'm glad I got it from REI so I could take it back.

I bought this just in case I got stuck on Mt Washington - fortunately I didn't. So the 1st time I used it will be the last - I was working on my kitchen faucet, under the sink, when it turned itself off. After pushing the power button several times it came back on, only to turn off again and again. It turns out that the middle battery does not fit snug in the battery compartment and everytime the batter moves it turns off. So, its going back today.

I've used this for home repairs, early morning trail runs, car repairs, and riding my bike home from school (in addition to my bike light). It's a nice lamp, and REI doesn't even list the most impressive feature: in either the near (two small LED) or far (one extra-bright LED) mode, if you hold the power button, the light will get progressively dimmer until you release the button. Amazingly adjustable, and very handy for increasing the battery life.

That said, the lamp doesn't get five stars because it tends to shine down on my glasses (when I wear them) and the glare can be annoying. I might be able to fix that with a strip of electrical tape. The back of the lamp is flat, too, which got a slightly uncomfortable over the course of the trail runs. Very minor issues both, so it still gets four stars.

Great headlamp for the money, the batteries last for ever which is nice. Probably isn't the best if you are going to be doing prolonged night use, mountain rescue etc...but for general around camping and running to the john in the middle of the night it doesn't get any better.

Would be handy if they put a red led on it or a red lens to flip down.

Very well built headlamp. Bright and good battery life. Not the best on the market, but definitely worth the money.

The fact that all the bulbs don't light up at the same time is my only con.

I love the dimmer feature on this unit. I dont always need a bright light, just ENOUGH light. Besides using in the backcountry, this light has saved me while working on my truck roadside. Though I haven't needed it yet, I like the flasher setting as well. My only gripe is that the batteries dont fit really tight and they tend to rattle.

I bought the black diamond Cosmo in April 2011 and returned it to REI yesterday, Nov 2. The high and low beams were consistently dim during 7 months of frequent indoor and outdoor use. Cycling through fresh batteries helped but for short periods of time; approximately one to two nights, or about six hours. I hung with it until a few weeks ago when the lamp abruptly went out while I was reading. An additional downer is the beam angle, when turned toward the ground, partly shone into my eyes. A bit irritating.

I like trying new gear so I have replaced this lamp with the Mammut TR1. My first headlamp, a Petzl Tikka, worked beautifully and reliably for 5 years. I may return to that model.
