Comments about Garmin Edge 500 Wireless Bike Computer:

Having gone through a few computers over the years, I have to say this is my favorite. On the bike it gives you the basics you need and then some with custom screens. Once you're home, plug it in and there's all you information mapped out for you. My two issues with the unit is 1) the temperature is never accurate or even close! They should just omit the thing because it's off by anywhere from 5 to 15 degrees with zero consistency. And 2) the included software is okay, but if you want a detailed base map you have to buy a mapping package and it's not well designed for data analysis. On a Mac I prefer Ascent. The new handlebar mount is great. All the international plugs and instructions are very wasteful.

Comments about Garmin Edge 500 Wireless Bike Computer:

I just used the Edge 500 for the first time today and already love it. No more entering time/speed etc. manually on a spreadsheet. I picked up the 500 alone (not the bundle) because I wanted the premium heart rate monitor not the one that comes in the bundle. If I think I will benefit from the cadence thing I will get that at a later date with my member discount coupon. This is a great tool.

Comments about Garmin Edge 500 Wireless Bike Computer:

The Edge 500 has much to recommend it. The customizable screens are great; you can display scores of data fields measuring virtually every aspect of your ride. Battery life is very good, the unit is readable in full sunlight, and it seems to be accurate. Installation of both the Edge handlebar mount is dead simple, and the cadence/speed sensor is pretty straightforward as well.

However I could never get the HR monitor to pair with the computer. I went through the manual, reset everything, removed batteries, etc. all to no avail. Garmin customer service was helpful (after a 23 minute hold), and immediately sent a new HR strap. It too would not pair with the unit. In the interim I had been using the unit without the HR, and on one ride a friend rode up, my unit immediately detected his Garmin HR monitor (a different model than mine), and tracked him throughout the ride whenever he was within about 20 meters of me!

Garmin next replaced the entire kit (unit, speed/cadence sensor, HR strap) but I had the same problem again. A Garmin rep (after the initial call everything was thankfully done by email) finally admitted that this was an ongoing problem. He then sent yet another HR strap (I now have a drawer full), this time a new design (strap snaps to the front sensor rather than attaching by inserting a circular tab through a hole). That resolved the problem.

So, if my experience is any guide, make sure you get a new model HR strap and all will be fine.

Comments about Garmin Edge 500 Wireless Bike Computer:

Really love this product. Easy to install, and the battery life (18 hours+) is a great improvement over the Garmin 405 I had been using for cycling. Also big props to Garmin's customer support. I did a really long ride and the transfer file got corrupted in the exchange to the PC. Sent the corrupted file to Garmin and they fixed and turned around with a couple days.

Very nice to see more accurate elevation, HR, speed, miles, etc all on one screen. Also, have started to utilize the "course" option which allows you to add in a a pre-defined course and the GPS tells you which way to go. Was very helpful in the double century I did recently.

I would definitely recommend this product.

Comments about Garmin Edge 500 Wireless Bike Computer:

The amount of choices for data display is huge. Everything seems to record all the time. If you want to change your displays of data you can do it mid ride. You get 3 screens to customize for out on the road. The only hard thing was choosing what to display, never have had so many choices. The screen glare is not a problem while wearing sunglasses, when your not just slightly tip the screen. Some loss of signal on heavily wooded roads, ends up being minimal--did not have cadence sensor installed. Used with upgraded heart rate sensor, works without any problems. Altitude was right on when running next to my VDO computer and when you sync it the software corrects any errant readings from your data. I don't see any drawbacks when comparing to other cycling computers.

Comments about Garmin Edge 500 Wireless Bike Computer:

I was afraid to spend that much on a cycling computer at first, bought it with the idea in the back of my head that I could return it. After uploading the first ride to my computer that idea left my mind. It's worth the extra $150 over your typical cycling computers!

It's amazingly customizable, and tons of fun to look at your data. I use it for Criteriums, Distance rides, group rides, marathons, and casual runs.

Comments about Garmin Edge 500 Wireless Bike Computer:

Overall, a great flexible computer. Internal battery only lasts 18 hourr, which is barely enough for a 300 km. For ultradistance rides (200 km - 1200 km), I find my Garmin Dakota 20 (uses AA batteries) to be more reliable recording distance over days, (the Garmin 500 still crashes or resets on occasion, and/or resets when you apply externl power). However, the Edge 500 does lap distances, which when following keysheets can be distance from the last cue (if you push the lap button at each turn). Thus on ultra's, I use my Garmin Dakota for trip distance and navigation, and my Garmin Edge 500 for distance from last cue, temperature, speed, heart-rate, and several other pages of values to entertain me.

Comments about Garmin Edge 500 Wireless Bike Computer:

Frozen temps no joy. The unit will not operate below 28f. After talking with the Garmin reps, I tested the unit in doors, (worked perfectly). I then took it out doors and chilled it in the snow to about 30f, (still worked). I then rode with it at 10f and the unit died at just about 15 minutes operation. After warming it up at home, I walked with it in the same 10f conditions with better results...it took almost 30 minutes to quit. for the money it should be a little less finicky.
