Comments about Outdoor Research Highland Bivy Sack:

I gave this a test run on the lost coast and the weather was damp, not heavy rains but misty clouds that would pass throughout the night. I awoke at 2am one night to discover the inside to be soaked, my sleeping bag was soaked. I followed the simple instructions and left the zipper open 12 inches (instructions say 6) to allow the bivy to vent. It wasn't here that the water leaked in. The entire length of the bivy was damp from head to toe. I don't know if it's because it's not actually not waterproof or it was from the condensation of my own breath, but like I said I had the vent open, it didn't leak from there, but I still ended up soaked and it wasn't even raining that hard. Don't buy this thing; it put a real damper on my trip. No pun intended. Stay away from this bivy, it's useless in wet weather.

Comments about Outdoor Research Highland Bivy Sack:

I just received this bivy today. It has been on back-order for 3 weeks now. I took that as a good sign people liked this bivy. I set it up in my backyard and it took longer to get my sleeping pad out than it took to set up the bivy. It has the same amount of room you would get in any other quality bivy. Overall first impression was a good all around, but not great. My only problems with is the bivy are the pole is made of a flexible plastic not the normal DAC poles that most backpacking tents come with today and the starting and ending points for the zippers for the main shell and the mesh catch each other very easily.

Most of my experience with bivy sacks has been in the Marine Corps. I hate having things on my face while I sleep. That is the only way to stay dry in the military issue bivy unless you can find some sticks and use your poncho liner as a lean shelter. But we all know it will fall down in the middle of the night by wind or marines. So long story short it is very nice to have the fabric off your face and not have to set up a one man tent.

Comments about Outdoor Research Highland Bivy Sack:

Read the other reviews and had to weigh in. Bought this bivy over the winter and have so far logged over 20 nights in it. This is my third bivy sack but first hooped bivy. This bivy is very roomy expanded footbox is great. I used this in conjunction with a tarp but on two different trips left the entire bivy except the head portion exposed to the elements. One trip it rained hard 4 days and this thing is completely waterproof. You will get some light condensation but you get that with any bivy or even a tent. Only draw back is the weight at 1.5 lbs is a little heavy, but livable.

Comments about Outdoor Research Highland Bivy Sack:

I purchased this Bivy Sack to cut weight in my pack for winter packing. This was my first Bivy sack so I tried it out in the backyard before taking it on a long trip and realizing it sucks. It was a January night in MN -18 below with about a 20 MPH wing. I have a -20 Northface bag that I used that nigh combined with a tarp to block the wind. I was surprised how warm I was throughout the night. Now it wasn't a night at the Sheraton under a down blanket warn but I woke up the next morning…… and in good health. that says a lot after spending the night in -18 weather. The only thing that was annoying was trying to get my breath to ventilate. I could see my breath go up freeze and come back down on my bag making it a little damp…but not a big deal. With that being said I have used the bivy so many times I cant count and it stands up to my not so nice to equipment mentality.

Comments about Outdoor Research Highland Bivy Sack:

Okay I have used this bivy for 3 week long backpacking trips this summer. Got rained on a total of 6 days in this bivy. I used it in conjunction with a naoh tarp but left the entire end of the bivy exposed to get more room in the tarp. This is a great bivy very roomy excepts the larger air mattresses larger foot box this thing is bomb proof. I love this bivy.
