An agent of urban utility and transport, the Scott SUB (Speed Utility Bicycle) 40 bike provides a stable, fun ride for commuting, store-running, fitness training and more.

  • Hydroformed Evo/Aero 6061 aluminum frame and fork provide the stiff ride needed for maximum handling and pedaling efficiency
  • Shimano components and a 24-speed drivetrain respond easily to the demands of the changing city landscape
  • Tektro V-brakes provide smooth deceleration when you need to finesse your speed
  • Flat handlebar creates a comfortable, upright riding position; platform pedals let you pedal with any shoes
  • Smooth-rolling 700c wheels are outfitted with Continental Sport Contact tires, which feature puncture protection and an excellent all-around tread pattern
  • Frame accommodates optional racks and fenders for the convenience of year-round commuting (sold separately)
  • Specs are subject to change

After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Contact your nearest REI bike shop for details and an appointment for this important service.

Comments about Scott SUB 40 Bike - 2010:

I have been riding this bike for about a month now. Put on approximately 120 miles. The bike's gearing is smooth, it rolls fast, and peddles really nice. Takes on paved bike trails and roads with ease. Very agile. Had some rear brake squealing after the first week, so I wiped off the rims (grease from the bike chain) and toed-in the pads slightly, problem solved. This is my first "urban/utility" bike and I like it alot!

      Service and delivery comments:

I did bring this bike in for a front sprocket gear adjustment (after about 25 miles) and the guys at the Saratoga shop adjusted, tested and gave it back to me with 10 minutes. No problems since.

Comments about Scott SUB 40 Bike - 2010:

I searched and tested bikes for two weeks and kept coming back to this bike! Lets get this straight, this is my opinion, bikes are built individual to the rider, dont buy it if it doesnt fit, or you are a "PRO" riding 50-60 miles a day! the "large" fit me wonderfully! Im commuting 20 miles a day to work, a rigid frame, smooth 700c rims, and good components, provide me with excellent handling, less fatigue, and incredible speed, all for less than [$]!!! and be real, its less than [$], if you dont like this bike, go ahead and spend [$], but if you live a practical lifestyle, and enjoy good quality, i highly recommend this bike!

Comments about Scott SUB 40 Bike - 2010:

I have had this bike for almost a month and I like it more everyday. I ride it about 15 miles to work and it is has been great. The back breaks did squeak pretty loudly for the first week, but I liked it so people would hear me. It has now stopped without any aid by me. Very light, very agile, very quick and easy to build up speed.

Comments about Scott SUB 40 Bike - 2010:

I have been riding this bike for a couple months now (50 miles per week or so) and I am really enjoying it. It is comfortable, fast, and very easy to ride. I am 6'2" and the XL frame is great for me. It provides a stretched and comfortable riding position (even without drop bars). It is more forgiving than most road bikes. What I mean by that is it does not rattle your bones or destroy your hands/arms on bumpy roads and the 32mm wide tires are great for cornering and stability (especially if you are not a pro cyclist). Shifting through the gears is smooth and effortless plus it feels like a very good pedal to power ratio. Best of all, this bike is FAST! Also, it doesn't hurt that it is very good looking. I recommend adding the Scott SUB urban kit (fenders + rack) that bolts on very easily. They really dress it up and make it stand out in a crowd with all the white trim and they are better than most aftermarket fenders. One of the best looking bikes I have seen in years.

The only drawback I see to this bike is it is not super light (26lb), about 5-8lb heavier than nice fixed gear or road bikes, but relatively lightweight compared to most hybrid/commuter bikes. Also, this bike needs to be set up in order or it to be comfortable and functional. Take advantage of REI's free bicycle service work when you purchase a new bike. You will need them to adjust gear sprockets, chain, and brakes after you ride the bike for awhile and break it in. I also had them turn over my handlebar stem for a more aggressive forward lean (it looks really sharp and feels good). Lastly, the pedals need some sort of clips as they do not come with any and the grips are not overly comfortable (I recommend Ergon grips).

I added the fender + rack kit, Ergon grips, toe clips, head + tail lights, bottle cage, cable lock, and hand pump and the bike still feels lightweight and is very quiet while riding.

I haven't had any issues with this bike in the 2 months that I have owned it and the components seem to be holding up great. Compared to most other bicycle brands that offer similar type bikes, I don't think you can beat what this bike has to offer. I compared it to bikes costing over twice as much and still chose the SUB 40. With a little customization, this bike has big potential!

Comments about Scott SUB 40 Bike - 2010:

THE bike looks great. but its a bike only made for commuting not for long hauls. i can only get about ten miles on this bike and i had enough. i have a hardtail that i have been riding and put 20 to 30 miles on before im exhausted. Was looking for a bike that i could go further on and this was not the bike.
