Overall a great multi-tool.

The best thing about it is that it has the tools that I use the most (plyers, knife and screw drivers) in a size and weight that I can actually carry in my pocket all the time.

The one real design flaw relates to the ability to extend the "jaws" of the plyers using only one hand with the flick of the wrist, which seems like a great feature but really isn't. The result is that with some use the jaws of the plyers begin to slip down while in your pocket which "unlocks" the whole unit so you've got an open set of plyers in your pocket. It would be better if the Octane could be locked in the closed position just as it can in the open position. The knife blade would still be available using one hand.

Even with this flaw, which I hope Gerber will fix, I would recommend the Octane because it's the only multi-tool I've found that fits comfortably in my pocket. That is when it stays closed.

Having owned a number of Gerber and Leatherman tools, this comes as a nice addition to my tools. Gerber takes a cue from Leatherman in having an externally accessible knife blade. No more having to open the tool to use the most used tool of the lot. The other tools (screwdrivers, package opener) need a little work to get out, but mine needs to be broken in. It's ironic that the knife has a plastic clamshell package opener is packed in a plastic clamshell itself, requiring another knife to open! Overall, a very nice everyday carry knife. Highly recommended.

This tool has its ups and its downs. When i first got the tool, it was difficult to open one-handed. After a while, it loosened up and became easier. However, it became a little too loose, and will sometimes slip open in my pocket. I got a tiny bit of surface rust on my blade, but I believe that I can quickly remedy that with some steel wool. I love that unlike many multi tools, the blade is on the outside, so you don't have to open the whole tool to get to the one that is used most. The one-handed opening is wonderful, making it easy to use your pliers when you have one full hand. This tool is fairly strong, I carved through some hard wood with it and picked up a heavy pot of boiling water with the pliers. I carry this tool everywhere I go, and it has proved helpful many times.

I like the overall design of the tool, and it has most of the tools I would need (namely the bottle opener :)
I really wish that it had a can opener instead of the clamshell package opener. Will neat, I use this for camping, not urban camping. After 2-3 weeks of use, the mechanism holding the plier parts up in the tool for quick deployment came loose. The screws stripped easily so repairing the mechanism failed. Ended up returning the tool.

I really do like the slide-out mechanism concept, and miss my old Gerber Diesel pliers!
