I bought this pack for my 10 year old son for our annual hiking trip through the huts in the white mountains. My biggest complaint about this (which may be true of other external-frame packs) is that it assumes you are going to have a tent or a sleeping roll attached to the bottom-outside of pack. If that's not the case (we sleep in huts... no need for that gear), the pack is way too top-heavy. There's no way to shift the bulk of the pack downward on the frame. Frustrating!! I don't think kids are likely to be carrying that kind of heavy gear anyway, so I think even if you were to attach a sleeping back to the outside, it would still be unbalanced b/c heavier items (water) would be closer to the top. When we are scrambling up rocks, the pack invariably shifts forward and basically falls over his head. You can see from the attached photo how high the pack sits. The price is awesome, so I gave it 3 stars. But consider this one carefully before buying. I would not buy again (but plan to continue using).

I bought this pack for my 10 year old son late last summer (85 lbs.). I prefer an external frame for kids, especially. The pack proved comfortable and sturdy for a 14 mile round-trip hike. Plenty of space for gear; straped on sleeping bag to frame under pack. We did have a lot of rain, but a trash bag over the pack served well to keep gear dry. Quality pack.

The construction of this pack is very durable. Unfortunately, this means added weight, which is a challenge for my 60 lb, 10 year old son and his gear. It is good for moderate terrain, but shifts a bit too much for more challenging trails (typical of external frame packs), so you might want to consider this if your child is still developing their balance and motor skills.
The biggest shortcoming of this pack is the open main compartment. It does not have a drawstring or closing flap, and the main to flap is too small to cover the opening effectively. This means if you are travelling through wet climate, you'll either need to pack everything in plastic bags, or get a pack cover. A cover is extra weight you should not need when considerig how to squeeze out every pound with a small child.
