Comments about Electra Townie 21D Bike - 2013:
Broke my back riding last year, my physical therapist recommended this bike and it rides very nicely but I was used to a faster bike, the seat is far too wide and it cannot really dig into faster gears, still a very nice ride overall , the flat-foot technology (this attribute could use a less clumsy name) really does sit the rider straight up, well made with sturdy reliable components, this is an excellent ride for the price and with time I believe we'll form a true friendship

Comments about Electra Townie 21D Bike - 2013:
I got this bike because I have very bad arthritis in both knees. I can use the recumbent bikes at the gym with no pain, riding a regular bike becomes very painful very quickly. I looked into recumbent bikes and various hybrids and decided that the Electra Townie had what I needed. It's flat foot technology allows me to peddle aggressively without pain and plant my feet on the ground when I need to. This is a big deal since I was nervous being back on a bike after decades away. The bike looks good, is easy to ride and light enough that I can move it around when necessary. I look forward to my morning rides before work with anticipation now. Sunrise over Boston is great to see from the Charles river bridges. My head is clearer, my knees hurt less and I'm getting stronger. This bike has been a wonderful experience so far.

Comments about Electra Townie 21D Bike - 2013:
I bought the Townie 21d about a month ago. My local REI had one in a box. They offered to put it together for me so I could pick it up that day. I returned to the store about two hours later to pick it up.
I had a 2010 Townie Euro 8d that was okay but not great. I did not care for the gearing or the larger circumfrence tires. I test rode a Townie 21d at a local bike shop and loved it. However, I did not want to deal with that bike shop due to its less than stellar customer service.
I knew that REI carried Electra Bikes, so I decided to check it out. The price was the same as the bike shop, and I know that REI does not do any kind of dealing on bikes. What was attractive, however, was the fact that I would receive a 10% dividend on the bike purchase.
The bike is great. It climbs well due to the extremely low gearing. It also goes pretty fast. I estimate I have gotten it up to about 20 mph. While that is not road bike speed, it is respectable.
What really sets this bike apart is the comfort. I took a 2+ hour ride with no residual discomfort.
The style and look of the bike are also very nice. The only problem with the white frame with red rims is that it gets dirty very quickly. That is a really minor complaint.
I love this bike. Hopefully, I will be able to depend on REI for maintenance and repairs.
Service and delivery comments:
The staff in the bike area of the Tustin store are great. They have been really helpful to me. They also seem to be pretty knowledgeable.

Comments about Electra Townie 21D Bike - 2013:
The Townie is one of the most comfortable bikes I've ever ridden. Sold my Ponderosa to buy the Townie as the "maturation" process, and foot surgery, had made riding a Mountain Bike not so much fun.
Really liked the Ponderosa, and the Arriba before that, but as I no longer am able to ride single track or ride "serious" off-road, I found myself not biking at all. I had ridden the Townie a year or so ago, and really liked the ease and comfort it offered. Just took me awhile to mentally accept that I could no longer ride a mountain bike.
Love the Townie and is always a pleasure to ride it. Short jaunts around the neighborhood, or a half-day ride are equally enjoyable.
I have the 21D, though I think the 7D would have enough gear range to do the type of general riding I now do.
Solid, quiet, comfortable ride. Kind of funny that this bike is marketed to a younger generation as it is great for us older (post-50) types, or for those that have some physical challenges that make riding the standard type bikes a chore.

Got a white one in Jul 2010 and love it! I'm 300 pounds, 6'2", with stubby legs and a very long torso, so I wasn't sure this bike would fit me, but it just managed to fit. I've a similar bike, a "large" Giant Suede 7-speed, that fits me better (almost TOO comfy), but the Townie is much lighter and better handling, not to mention it has 14 more gears (don't buy a 7-speed unless you have almost no hills or you be walking!).
I took this bike to Yellowstone and the Tetons last summer, and it did fine on the dirt and cinder trails, but mostly I ride city streets and paved paths in the mountains above Vegas - it's the perfect bike for this. And it is BEAUTIFUL in white with those red rims! And if you're older (I'm 70) and/or fat (my belly is HUGE), this bike's upright seating position is perfect - comfortable and no leaning forward so no pinching of the big belly and no breathing problems either. It may be the most perfect all-around bike for the most people.

Comments about Electra Townie 21D Bike - 2013:
I really like the feel of this bike. For the most part the shifting and braking systems are smooth (one gear gets a little clickety-clackity), and the seat is well positioned and comfortable...so it makes for a nice ride.
Most of the other reviewers say that this bike is lightweight, which either means I'm a weakling or I don't have a good perspective on what lightweight is. I only lift it to get it into my house or on the back of my Jeep, but it seems a wee heavyish to me.
Overall, it's a great multipurpose bike for a pretty decent price. I'd give it 4.5 stars if fractions were an option.

Got the Blue color at my local REI, I saw this online but didnt want to buy something in the window that I cannot test ride before spending the money on. So, I visited my local store (Tukwila, WA) & they had the blue color, brand spanking new, tags were still on the bike like no one have takin it out for a ride yet. It was pouring rain outside & I got lots of looks from people that must have been thinking that I'm nuts to go ride in this Seattle weather. I came prepared with rain jacket & my rain hat. Needless to say, I couldnt get off the bike for more than an hour. It was just a pleasure to bike. The parking lot behind the store was empty of vehicles so I rode, & rode, & rode until I finally realized that my rain gear can only protect my upper body. My pants were soaking wet. I did not buy the bike that day as I have not brought my bike carrier with me & I was sure no one is going to purchase this bike. The next day I went back to the store & was happy to purchase this fun bike. The components aren't top of the line but it handles well, shifts smoothly & it just so darn good looking bike for a black top trails that Seattle are famous for. I would have to say this this bike is exactly the same size as my 17 inch mountain bike, however the shape is much different in that it could accomodate a person from 5 feet & up. This bike rides well on blacktop & dirt trails but not on grass or rocks & I wouldnt think of going to mountain muddy trails, the tires arent that good for off roading.

Love this bike. Very lightweight, great components, Cool style, I love the White/Red/Black theme. I've already bought some really slick sneakers that match. With my Townie, my sneakers, and my hawaiian shirt, I'm ready to cruise.
Kudos to REI too. I bought the bike just a couple weeks before its price dropped for the anniversary sale, and when I brought this to their attention, they credited me the difference. Great product, great business.
Service and delivery comments:
Bought it on line, and since it must be shipped to an authorized reseller for assembly, I had it shipped to my local REI store in Marina. I was notified by email the whole way... Order, Ship, Deliver, Build. The only thing that would have made it better is to know that the Marina store already had this bike in stock and I could have just walked in and bought it.
It would be nice if the REI website would allow you to check stock in local stores before placing an order.

We were looking at lofts for sale in Chinatown and the Electra Hawaii model caught our eye in the development's model home. Eye-catcher... It was cool in red and white! I visited REI the same weekend and by chance, there it was (the red Hawaii) in the REI window! Grazing through the cycle section I spotted the 2010 Electra Townie. The flat foot design had my attention (I'm getting older) and the cruiser seat felt comfortable. I took it home and what a great first ride! Nine miles the first day with only one adjustment to the seat height. It's easy to handle, easy to adjust and comfortable -- It's every bit as good as my vintage Klein Rascal. The techs at Manhattan Beach REI had the bike well prepared and there was not-a-thing for me to do but ride! Thank you for a awesome new bike [...]!
