Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
this was my first experience with trekking poles. spent 2 weeks backpacking in china with 7 buddies. the guy that was leading our trip was trying to convince us that we needed them or that they would at least make the trip easier.
i'm young (28) and told him i didn't need help walking. haha...
finally he convinced us by saying there will be dogs in the villages we go through that will attack (which we found to be true) and the poles would help us fight them off. one swift whack to the head to keep them back.
i'm glad there were dogs there because that was the excuse the broke me down. ill never go back. my knees felt brand new. by back didn't even think about aching. it was like i didn't even spend the day backpacking.
the grips are comfortable the shocks performed and held up great.
i'm taller 6'4" and they fit great. didn't feel to fragile extended....
the poles didn't slip even with full weight on them over multiple descents.
overall if you are reading this, and have never used trekking poles before; get 2 don't settle for one (other guys did this and wished they had both). shock or no shock absorbing doesn't really matter too much. get em' and enjoy the minimal wear on your joints and back. if you are older or have back or joint problems this will change your life. if you are younger it will make you feel like you are 18 again...
why wouldn't you get them? that's the better question...

Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
I never thought I would enjoy trekking poles. I had gone hiking with some friends who used them and they let me try them out. It took the strain off my back and I was able to hike longer and further than I had before. They are especially useful when going up hill.

Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
Unlike several poles that specify "good for downhill", the double grip made these ideal for every trail condition.
Helped balance a lot, much more confident on narrow and/or rugged trails.

Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
Just tried these poles out on a hike and loved them. They provided the security I needed to hike trails that were steep, uneven, and rocky. There's no question that they made hiking both safer and pleasurable. I felt steady on my feet each step of the way. Didn't feel the usual stiff calves the day after either.

Comments about Black Diamond Trail Shock Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
I laughed at my buddy in my early hiking days for using trekking poles, but now I'm a believer!
The Black Diamond Trail Shock standard had high reviews, but the compact model fit me very well at 5'11". They extend as far as I need them but are considerably more compact which makes for easy packing and lashing.
My buddy has a pair of REI poles, and I'll say the small elastomer bumpers and flintlock system of the Black Diamonds are considerably better than REI's.
The DO have a fair amount of flex under pressure, but it doesn't affect durability as I'm over 200 lbs and they're staying strong.
