I've used the Five Finger KSOs for almost 3 years now, and have just bought my second pair. If you're on the fence about barefoot running I urge you to buy these shoes and give it a try. Some background...I broke my ankle as a child and have had issues with my feet ever since. In 2010, I read 'Born to Run' by Chris McDougall and was inspired to give barefoot running a try. I bought some KSOs and never looked back. My chronic ankle and knee pain disappeared, and running was fun again. I went from painfully doing 10 miles a week to doing 5-7 miles a day, and my legs felt stronger than ever. I've also worn KSO Treks and Bikila LS, and while both were quality designs, I always went back to the KSO. As I said earlier, I just bought a second pair, but not because I needed to; my original pair are still going strong, with a small hole in the stitching being the only wear and tear I've seen on them. The Vibram sole is dirty, but otherwise like new, and they've been through some rough terrain. To me, they are the most comfortable Five Fingers. The cons I listed aren't serious problems, but things you should be aware of. First, your feet will get wet running in the rain or through puddles. Second, the soles are pretty much smooth and running on wet asphalt or over ice and snow can get slippery. And last, the soles are thin; 4mm at most. Running on rough trails and on gravel or rocks will hurt. Vibram makes some great trail running shoes though so check them out if it's an issue. The shoes themselves don't do more than provide some protection from the road; you can get the same benefits running completely barefoot. Read 'Born to Run'. Learn the science behind barefoot running then try it out for yourself. All I can say is that having had some serious foot and ankle issues in the past, I was pretty skeptical. But running barefoot has truly changed my life, and I've made it my mission to convert as many runners as I can.

I bought the KSO due to "pressure" from a barefoot running/Crossfit proponent. My first pair ripped on the big toe after the first attempt to run. The store allowed me to trade them in. We discussed sizes and tried one size down to see if it would correct the problem. My second pair ripped in the same place and on the mesh across the forefoot on each shoe. I exchanged them AGAIN and didn't use them for running but focused on Crossfit uses. They held up longer but ended up ripping in the same places when I did more vigorous exercises (box jumps, jumprope, etc). Once the holes are created the KSO part does not "Keep Stuff Out" Blisters would form when I run in them, not because of the shoe, but b/c of sand and rocks that came in from the holes and got lodged under my toes. I gave up on the returns since I was out of the store's exchange period. I tried contacting Vibram multiple times and have had no response, not even an acknowledgement of my e-mails. I now use the shoes only for swimming in Lake Tahoe. Perfect for the granite boulders but I still get sand and rocks packed into the toes.

This shoe has a design flaw

I have a pair of Vibram Classics, Sprints and KSOs. The KSOs are particularly not a good choice for running or walking long distance despite the design aimed at such. After running in these a short distance, I got abrasions on both feet in the same place; On the inside of my foot just past the big toe knuckle. There is a seam here with extra material causing this. I have also read other folks having similar problems. The problem is remedied by a bit of first-aid tape on the foot or wearing socks but for a "barefoot" shoe, this is inexcusable. I really hope Vibram fixes this design flaw. I love my Classics and Sprints though which I think have more thoughtful designs.

KSO - The All Around

Overall the KSO is a great all around VFF shoe. I recommend the VFF for anyone who likes the idea of barefoot/minimalist footwear. If you are new to the brand, go with the KSO. If you are only interested in running, try the Bikila I suppose, otherwise the KSO is a great entry line. Not much to say really as most of the rest is preference based. If you love VFF and don't have a KSO style, get one. If you are unsure of whether or not you want to get a first pair of VFF just consider if you love the idea. If you do, then you will enjoy the pro's and learn from the con's (which are largely instructional to your posture anyways).

Yesterday I hated running

I'm 37 6ft, 220lbs and yesterday i hated running; my feet would get hot and my ability to run would die, my internal organs would feel bruised and battered, I would find it hard to breath after a mile, my knees would hurt, and I could never manage 3.5 miles without walking for part of it. Today I ran 3.5 miles in 34 minutes a personal best and felt absolutely amazing doing it. My lower legs are telling me that tomorrow I may wish I had started a little easier with the new running style but other than that and some slight chafing on one of my toes I do not regret my purchase and can't wait to try them in a multitude of other ways.

Best. Shoe. Ever.

Look, if you're at all curious about these weird little shoes, just buy them. Humans weren't meant to run in shoes, so get these and fix your biomechanics: rid yourself of shin splints and knee problems while strengthening your feet, ankles, and calves. I use them for everything from rafting to free climbing, and I've come to believe that their versatility is better than advertised. I've been trail running on snow, ice, mud, rocks, etc. and loved every second of it! One caution: almost every time I wear them out someone questions me about them. I happen to enjoy randomly socializing with strangers. If you don't, then just beware that it will happen.

I love these shoes

I just got these shoes last week and I love them. They take a moment to get them on and get used to using different parts of your feet and legs, but once you get used to that they are great! Immediatly you will notice increase in balance, stealth, and increse in muscle tone. They are well constucted and great traction. I have a pair of Feelmax shoes that barely lasted 4 months, I know these will outperform them and are more comfortable. Word of advise I do not recomend wearing sox with five finger shoes, to avoid the chance of blistering. I already had 5 people ask me about these shoes in 2 days and they are all ordering them.

Great Shoes!

Great shoes that take a little bit of time to get comfortable (about a week of 3-6 hours/day) but once you do, you'll forget you're even wearing them. The best part is that at first, all my friends say they look rediculous but about 10 minutes after, they'll say "I'm just gonna keep making fun of you until I actually get a pair..." or something to that effect. They have done wonders for a bad knee that I have and my back. Simple to wash, you can stuff them anywhere. One thing I see a lot of people saying is that it takes time to put them on... for me, it originally took me about 1-2 min/shoe. After one week of doing it every day, it was 40 seconds/shoe (yes-I did time it) which is about equal to a normal shoe with tying. Definitely get them when you can-- they're sold out everywhere.

excellent

I just wrote a lengthy review and the page reloaded and I lost it, so this is a summary of what I wrote before. I ordered 2 pairs from REI, I highly recommend this as the pair I thought would be the one to fit, didn't. My main concern was wearing them in the cold (Michigan). I have been wearing them up to an hour in 30F weather, and I have been fine; near 40F I had no discomfort at all. The KSOs also look more 'normal', and can be worn with jeans, etc. and not look too funky. These things are amazing, everything you walk on feels so cool. I do have a problem with them though... I hate wearing regular shoes now...

Wow... Just Wow

These KSOs are amazing. I bought mine and tested them out immediately. I went to Castlewood State Park and hiked 3 miles on both rough and smooth terrain. Although the rough terrain was a bit uncomfortable, the KSOs did great with gripping the rocks. The KSOs felt perfect on grass and soft dirt. I also did a bit of rock climbing on the bluffs at the park. They gripped the crevasses perfectly and I felt I had complete control of my feet and the KSOs performed beautifully. Later I walked a mile on pavement. Although the walk left my feet sore, I figure some time to adjust to the new thin sole would help relieve the soreness. I would recommend these shoes to any avid athlete.

Awesome

I love the five-fingered shoes! My feet, ankles, and calves have gotten stronger, and my knees feel better. I wear these for walking and running whenever possible. I still can't run as fast as I can with regular running shoes, but I'll get there soon. I have done several hikes, including in the snow, and cross country on approach for a climb and these performed really well. They do build up a smell, where my other shoes don't, and need to be cleaned regularly.
