Built for speed on the XC trail, the Scott Scale 70 hardtail mountain bike is an excellent performer thanks to a lightweight frame, 100mm of front suspension and a dependable Shimano drivetrain.

  • Custom-butted 6061 aluminum frame is lightweight and stiff, maximizing efficiency in the climbs while remaining responsive in the descents
  • Rock Shox Dart 2 suspension fork offers 100mm of travel and features adjustable rebound with TurnKey lockout
  • All-Shimano drivetrain features an SLX rear derailleur and Deore shifters for snappy, precision shifts through the 27 gears
  • Shimano hydraulic disc brakes ensure simple, effective finessing of your speed as well as outright stopping power
  • Stout Alex XC-44 rims are laced onto Scott and Shimano hubs; Schwalbe Rocket Ron tires provide excellent traction
  • Scott stem, handlebar, seatpost and saddle make for a comfortable cockpit
  • Specs are subject to change

After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Contact your nearest REI bike shop for details and an appointment for this important service.

Comments about Scott Scale 70 Mountain Bike - 2010:

I got this bike as my do-all, park/trail rider, as I have limited space to store multiple, narrow-minded bikes. I have put about 300mi on it since purchase, to and from work, casual park rides, and several Arizona trails.

I have had no issues mechanically so far and it's been roughed up pretty good on the rock-laden trails around here. The brakes are great with plenty of grip and modulate really well. Drivetrain is smooth and I like the 2-way downshift lever on the shifters. The fork works well enough with spring preload and rebound damping adjustments, but should probably be upgraded somewhere down the road (which basically gives you a Scale 50). The Schwalbe tires roll really well on pavement but are best used on hardpack soil. I got Serfas Drifters for the street and WTB Velociraptors for more traction in loose dirt.

I compared this bike endlessly with bikes priced between $800-1200 and the design, look, weight and components made this my pick. The Scale 70 has a longer cockpit than other bikes in it's class which I really like. It's intended to make the ride more responsive at the price of a little comfort. If needed, a shorter stem and higher-rise handlebar can get you a little more upright for more comfort. For me, I prefer to dial back a racy bike than try to make a comfort bike peppier.
