I bought my first Royal Robbins Extreme Expedition Shirt at REI back in 2005. It is holding up well and has became my favorite shirt for outdoor activities (hiking, fishing, backpacking) and travelling.POCKETS: Royal Robbins got it right on this shirt; integrated pocket for your pen, velcro double breast pockets for easy access (one zippered for extra security), huge hidden pockets built into breast (perfect for maps, hats, etc).I wear this shirt in hot humid weather and keep cool and dry, AND wear with a quick-dry undershirt when it's cold out. Looks good when travelling (acceptable in Temples of Kyoto) and meets all functional needs. I just got two more in the mail and am now buying a lifetime supply (plus a few for presents).

Construction is well-done, and the lines are trim. Sizing is on the 'low end' of the range (i.e., the RR seems smaller than similar style shirts with the same size label). Rear vents are discrete but very functional in warm weather.

I won't call this a 'gripe', but I admit I wish the pockets were done differently. On the outside are two vertical flap-closure chest pockets, fastened with velcro and no bigger than what you'd expect on a dress shirt. The right chest pocket is zippered underneath the flap as well. Behind the outside pockets on both sides are very large 'Napoleon' horizontal entry pockets, whose generous openings are fastened with a single velcro tab positioned midway down the opening.

If I could change anything about this shirt, it would be the pockets:

- I'd widen the right outside flap pocket (top zippered opening too narrow for my hand to effectively reach inside).
- I'd prefer the left outside flap pocket weren't subdivided to provide a dedicated pen / pencil sub-pocket.
- At this price level I'd prefer (and have seen) fully-closing 'Napoleon' style pockets. The RR's single central velcro tab leaves about 80% of the opening unsealed.

I'm fully satisfied with the shirt. The pocket notes are more 'wish' than 'gripe'.
