Comments about Scott Scale Junior 20'' Bike - 2010:
Recently purchased this bike for my son's 8th birthday. It looks like a little race bike and is specced with great components for a 20" ride. I haven't checked the weight, but it's definitely pretty light as kids' bikes go. He's ridden it a few times now and it seems to handle as good as it looks. The shifting is smooth and he's already got the hang of changing gears in anticipation of changes in the terrain. He's average size for his age and seems to have no problem reaching or using the brake levers. The fork is decent, although for the littler kids, they may not weigh enough to move it much on anything except larger bumps.
Today we discovered the biggest negative -- which is common to most 20" bikes regardless of manufacturer: No quick release skewers on the hubs. I hadn't noticed this before (I'm so used to seeing them on my own bikes it didn't occur to me to look) so when he got a goathead and flatted, we had to hike a mile or so home. So far I've only seen one 20" that has QR skewers and that's the GT Stomper; I'm a little surprised that a bike as well-specced and otherwise trailworthy as the Scott doesn't have them. I'm going to investigate retrofitting the bike with skewers, but in the meantime I'll be sure to carry the necessary wrenches and hope that flats aren't too common an occurrence.
One note: I was considering buying him a 24", knowing that it would be too big now, but that he could grow into it. That would have been a big mistake. He's about 50" tall and I think he'll have a few years on this bike before the 24" is necessary or even appropriate. The 20" is perfect for both his size and his ability.
This is a bike that can take an 8-10 year old as far as they want to go with it, whether that's just riding for fun or beginning racing and it should hold up for years. I expect that it will have plenty of life left when his little brother is ready to swing a leg over it.
