After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Contact your nearest REI bike shop for details and an appointment for this important service.

Let me just get the paint job out of the way. I think it's ugly, really ugly. It is something different, so if you like it, it's probably a huge plus, but trust me, if the picture looks bad, it's not any better in person.
That said, I love the bike. It's zippy and responsive. The components are great. The Shimano shifters are smooth and accurate (though the gear indicators are pretty cheesy). Shopping around, I narrowed my choices down to a Specialized that was priced about what the full price was on the SUB 30, but the shifters felt crude and the bike was always making some complaining sound. Going up in price 50% in the Specialized line put the components on par with the Scott, but priced itself out of competition.
It's not feather-light, nor is it suited to rough terrain, but if you're looking for road and maintained trail riding that can take an occasional bump, this is a great choice. I say "occasional bump" not because it feels in anyway delicate, it's feels very solid. But the road-bike-esque seat and lack of suspension makes prolonged rough riding uncomfortable.
Service and delivery comments:
Bike delivery (to store) was reasonably quick. There was some confusion in the store about where to actually pick up the bike when I went to customer service (hint: go to the bike service counter), and one brake lever is rotated down quite a bit from the other but that's easy enough to fix. Everything is mounted solidly and adjusted perfectly otherwise though.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
I purchased this bike and the very day I brought it home the derailer began malfunctioning. I took it to REI Seattle and the bike tech repaired it and replaced the cable. I rode the bike that night fine, but in the morning the derailer broke yet again while I was riding away from my house. Any pressure or bumps will affect this bike's ability to shift. I would NOT reccoment this bike to anyone
