I have hiked over 200 miles in these boots...over 140 on the AT. After trying on just about every boot REI had in stock these fit my foot the best by far. The toe guard and rock guard along the lower part of the side are great. The toe box on these boots have just the right balance of extra space without being too roomy. My toes have never hit the end of my boots even on the toughest decents. I wear 11.5 in most athletic shoes and that's what size boot I bought so they run very true to size. I've read several reviews complaining about the laces but I am still using the laces that came with the boots. They don't hold the greatest when you are pulling them tight but they have lasted very well. I've hiked on the AT in the rain and snow and these boots have met the challenge every time. You do need to break them in before wearing them on a hike, but they weren't difficult to break in at all. They're a bit pricey, but well worth it in my opinion. I don't know how many miles I'll get out of these but after 200 miles they still look great. They honestly look like they've hardly worn at all. I would buy another pair and have recommended them to several people. I look forward to several more miles wearing these great boots.
I just bought it a week ago and this shoe feels a bit stiff when brand new and need couple miles to break in. I wear it for a bout 3 days befor heading to the real hike. I spent a day in Crater Lake walking on the1 foot snow and 7 miles in Fern canyon, this show is really stable, comfortable and 100% water proof. I think because of the high heel outsole, it got really good traction on dirt and snow, however when walking on the slippy rock, it's a bit slippy (it's still got traction but not sticky as those using Vibram). This shoe also come with a thin insole which I have replaced to a thick cusion's, beside the problem mentioned about, this show works perfectly for me.
These are great boots. I've worn them almost every day for over 4 months and have put in over 500 miles in these guys. I'm a scouter and plan to wear them to Philmont. They really didn't need to be broken-in much, they are extremely light-weight, do fine in snow and rain; worked out great on extended strenuous hikes (ie: Old Rag). I haven't had even one blister, but I almost always wear hiking socks. The only problem I've had is the shoe laces wore out, possibly because of the metal eye loops ... as others said, I'd bring an extra pair of laces on an extended trip. This model is an improvement over last-year's as they have a pull-loop on the back that you can get your finger in.
I have high arches, so I use the green Super Feet. I was concerned about not having Vibram soles, but it does not matter here. Asolo created the ultimate hiking boot. I tested Salomon Quest 4-D & Sky Wing, The North Face Dhaulagiri & Syncline, and also the Asolo Fugitive. The Fugitive was my favorite except it can feel a bit heavy. We all have different feet, but for ME this boot is the BEST. High-quality construction from this Italian maker is obvious, and I have no hot spots, slipping, blisters, or problems at all. Price? Yes, a bit spendy...but: I am not happy if my feet are not happy, and these make my feet smile! Grand Canyon becomes so much more enjoyable when you don't have to worry about your boots.
This is my 3rd pair of Asolos in 3 years. 1st were FX's but the arch was sliced through like a hot knife through butter by stepping on a sharp fence pole remnant in a creek. Took 'em back, no replacements in my size so had to upgrade to another Asolo. Wore them lightly for a year and while at a spring for water, gave them a rinse in the water coming from the pipe- instant massive soaker in one. Took em back- had to upgrade again to Morans to get a decent fit. Lasted a year with very light hiking. Made it through 3 days of elk hunting in wet, very cold conditions without a problem. 2 weeks later, both outside seams had separated and no longer waterproof. Took them back today. No more Asolos for me! I can't see spending big bucks for shoes that won't last a year of light hiking. Bought all leather Vasques, will try those.
my first trip out with this pair was on a cold damp and muddy 3 day trek. my feet stayed dry for the duration. this is the third pair of these boots i've purchased from asolo, the previous pairs were similar if not the same model/style. on previous pairs after 5 years of use the soles separated from the upper, and i expect the same to happen with these. super comfortable. i love these boots.
90 miles in the new mexican mountains, 36 hours of rain, the boot were a week old and not a single issue! That was back in 2010, I still wear the boots at least 3-4 days a week and its been nearly six years (2016). The tread is JUST wearing out now and only in the hot spots. I would kill for a new pair, and have spend a LONG time looking for them.
Plain Steerhide leather work bootsDanner Mountain light OriginalTimbeland Mt. Washington Summitt Hikers(2000 version)Asolo Moran GTX:These are all the boots I have owned that I can recall since my early Boy Scout days. As of right now I would recommend the Asolos boot to any novice to average hiker/backpacker. There was virtually no break-in and they are waterproof and light. I will however say that the only reason I went with these over more Danners is that I got them at the REI Scratch and Dent sale and they were unworn returns that only cost me [$]. I couldn't pass them up at a [$] original price. A personal CON to any boot is the inability to resole them. These fall into that category. Most brands have gone with molded over the stitchdown construction. Personal preference I guess.
I am impressed with these boots. Got them and two days later did 20 mile hike on the Connecticut AT. I was surprised that I did not get a single blister. The boots still need to be broken in some more but they are on their way. I really dig how light weight these boots are, but still have a ton of ankle support. These were my first pair of Asolo's and I will buy more if they continue to make a boot like this. I would reccommend this boot to anyone. Good luck finding a boot for yourself.
These are great boots for all around support for day use and backpacking! They handle well off-trail. They do require some break in, especially for those with wider feet.
