I bought these Kuhl shorts in Carbon color to replace some similar Black North Face shorts that had stitching in the seems coming out. The Kuhl shorts are notably better in every way.
Before I gush over these Renegade shorts, my only issue is that they are a little snug for my 32" waist. They fit right, but are a little too snug for my liking. The next size is 34, which is too big. Still, I like them so much I may add or lose weight to make these shorts fit a little better. This has nothing to do with quality or performance, so I still give it 5 stars.
This is my second pair of Kuhl shorts, and the quality is excellent as I expected. I like the contrasting stitching - it makes the shorts a little more distinctive. The color itself isn't a true black, it's more or a dark gray which I like better too. These are great-looking shorts that adapt in casual settings as well as any outdoor activities (running, hiking, and biking for me)
The pockets are great. The sunglass/phone pocket the previous reviewer noted is really convenient., but the zippered pockets on the thighs are nice too. I use the zippered pockets for my keys and other small items instead of the hand pockets since the small items can bulge out of the fabric in the hand pocket, and no one seems to notice anything is in the zippered thigh pockets.
I tried on similar styled shorts from Arc'Teryx, Salomon, PrAna, and Pearl Izumi at REI when making my purchase, and these were clearly better shorts (and value) imo.

As a father of 3 and avid traveler. I would recommend these shorts for travel, casual wear, water park and any park. These shorts are worth every penny comformtable and light weight. I am a big dude and they feel great. Went to legoland got on rides and water park and they stayed dry since they repeal water. They are cool and I get compliments from everyone. I am going to buy all colors. I never buy retail/full price but I became the newest fan of Kuhl shorts no more cheap shorts for me.

You know those garments you grow to love, the ones that you always reach for? The ones that you wish you could clone? For me, these Renegade shorts are the perfect example. In fact, I just ordered two additional pairs with the intent to sock one or two of them away for when the first pair wears out.
Kuhl advertises these shorts as having a relaxed fit to "accommodate athlete's hips and thighs" (Kuhl website). I'm not sure I qualify as an athlete, but I do have larger-than-average thighs. These shorts fit fantastically!
I really enjoy the 4-way stretch of the fabric. There is no binding or tightness with these shorts. Perfect for those long strides and high steps when hiking.
I wish I had more time with these shorts to comment on their durability - I guess I'll have to comment later.

I was going on a business trip where I would be spending 2 days outside on hot asphalt in an exhibition area and did not want to wear cotton. I picked these up due to their synthetic fabric and breathability. Ambient temps were well above 100 but I was comfortable all day in these shorts. Cell phone pocket is ingenious. Can't wait to try them out on my next hike.

The material and the build quality are very good. But the pros end here.
Except for the waist, which is right on, every other dimension is small.
The shorts claim to have a 12 inch inseam. But, when worn, it ends at the same place as my 10 inch shorts, which is just above the knees. By comparing these to the 10 inch inseam ones, I found that the rise of the Renegade is just too short.
The fit is also too tight. Tight in every area, the crotch, the buttocks, and the thighs, except for the leg openings which are surprisingly generous if not too big. Wearing these shorts is a lot like wearing tights. The shorts specifically claim to accommodate athletic thighs and, by once running for my high school track team, I think I qualify for athletic thighs. But if not for the stretchy material, I would rip the shorts apart by simply taking steps.
The color is not as shown either. The khaki color in the pictures is greyish. But the actual color is moss-like, a mix of green and brown.
For the ones in need of a pair of stretchy, tight-fitting shorts, these are worth looking into. But for people who want a pair of more "regular" shorts, they can just forget about these.
One extra star for the material.

I have been looking for shorts that have pockets and are comfortable and flexible enough to hike, exercise and have freedom in. These shorts fit my needs perfectly. I ride a longboard at the university and these shorts allow me to kick as hard as I want with my wallet, phone, keys and pen in the pockets with no issues. This is amazing! Also, they are very comfortable for lifting weights, riding bikes and hiking in. Bottom line is I will replace my wardrobe with Kuhl gear as soon as I get out of college and have a job!

The first pair I bought had an issue with the waist snap coming undone at random and regularly. That's a problem. Returned them with no hassle (thanks, REI) with a second pair that worked normally.
All was good until I took them rafting. One day sitting on a dry box and the rear started to pile noticeably.
"Born in the mountains", but not made to raft the rivers. Not exactly what I would have expected from Kuhl.
I'll be returning these.

These shorts are super comfortable (most comfortable I have owned) and stylish. I loved these shorts. However, the material is starting to pill up in between the legs. I am going to have to return them. I have only worn them maybe 10-15 times. Bummer.
