Comments about Mountain Hardwear Phantom +15 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
I have been a backpacker over 25+ years. I finally decided to purchase THE BEST 3 season sleeping bag on the market, bar none. After reading numerous articles and reviews, I narrowed it down to 3 finalists: Montbell UL Super Spiral Down Hugger #1, Marmot Helium 15, and the Mountain Hardwear Phantom 15.Being a Backpacker Magazine subscriber for over 5 years(Excellent magazine) I was leaning towards the Marmot which has won the Backpacker Magazine Editor's Award. But then I found an excellent website which changed my mind: [@]. It showed some of the most detailed reviews I've ever seen, and they are absolutely correct! Marmot has no neck baffle, which does not insulate the body from the cold air coming into the body area from the face opening. Also it has an unusually wide torso area which is good if you are a big stocky guy, but otherwise it is inefficient if you have athletic slender or medium sized body (I am 5'11" 155Lbs). Montbell is also excellent bag, but the hood design is pretty poor and I really dont' care about their stretching ability. It also adds few more ounces. Finally there is one more bag out there, the most expensive Marmot Plasma 15 which costs $470, but it's way out of my price range. So there it is, my final verdict is MH Phantom 15. And I love this bag! Backpacker Magazine just proved that they are not always right! :)

Alright, so you may be wondering, is this sleeping bag worth its price? And let me tell you, it is worth every penny and more! You feel the difference in quality right when you touch this thing. The loft is incredible, you can push the material down with your hand and when you lift your hand the material pops right back out. The draft collar is truly soft and nice, not just material wrapped around a drawstring like other bags. Haven't gotten to test its true capabilities because it doesn't get to 15 degrees in Southern California, but I'm sure it can hold up to anything. The stuff size is great for the amount of comfort it packs. And it has a great pocket inside for ipods or something of that sort! 2 things I would change though, is the drawstring pulling things can poke you, and the shoulder width can be a tad restricting, but GREAT for keeping in warmth. Everything else is amazing and more, the zipper, the seemingly perfect fitting hood, the foot box, and most of all 2 POUNDS for 15 degrees! Has to be the best temp to weight ratio out there! So if you are committed to the best money can buy, this bag is for you!
PS I use this as my covers in my bed now because it is so comfortable!

The most common question I have gotten about this bag..."Is it worth the money?" The answer, YES, YES, YES!
I bought this bag before I went out on a 10 day winter survival training course. The expected temperatures were not supposed to drop below 20F but they got down to the single digits most nights and this bag still kept me plenty warm. (Keep in mind that I was also using a self-inflating sleeping pad and knit hat to supplement my warmth and comfort.)
The hood and collar keep the warm air in when I roll over.
The zipper tends to get hung up on the surrounding material but only near the top of the bag.
The loft in the bag recovers quickly.
Spilled water runs right off the bag without soaking in.
The quality of construction is top-notch.
Without a doubt this bag is worth the money. I have been using it for over two years now and it shows minimal wear. I am excited that I will not need another 3 season bag for quite some time.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Phantom +15 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
This bag is probably my single favorite piece of backpacking equipment. It's soft, cozy, as light as any 15 degree bag you can buy, and compresses down to smaller than my old 45 degree synthetic bag.
As far as the quality of the down and comfort goes...I have a down comforter on my bed at home, and on cold nights I'll sometimes still open the windows and use this sleeping bag over my comforter because the 800+ fill is so plush and cozy in comparison. :P
I've used it in the Smokies and on the AT around the East Coast so far, can't wait to get out West and test it in some more extreme conditions as well.
With a lot of backpacking equipment, you must weigh the comfort and benefits of the gear vs. how much weight you are willing to carry, but there is no debate with this bag! It is truly a win-win, as you can save weight and gain the most comfortable, warm, cozy, sleeping bag you could imagine.
Hood, collar, zipper locations, and cinch cords are all deftly placed and work great. I am 5'10", 165 lbs, and the regular is super roomy as far as mummy bags go. The zipper snags aren't really a big deal as others have mentioned if you just zip it slowly and treat it as gently as you should be anyway.
(Price may SEEM high, but remember that down bags can have a lifetime of 20+ years if cared for properly. Well worth the investment if you ask me.)

Bag is as advertised. Comfortable, lofty, packable, and roomy and have had no trouble with the zipper. Spent a windy, 30 degree night and had to vent to let out some heat then settled in for a comfortable night on the Georgia AT in November. The draft collar is comfortable as is the hood - no draw strings pinching or pulling at your head or neck. Room to roll around and I am not a slender fellow at 5"10, 200 lbs. This is one to keep.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Phantom +15 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
I like the bag a lot, really good weight/warmth ratio. In world of bags right now this is definitely a killer deal of a bag and a great product.
My concerns with this bag is the very light material, which I feel is going to be punctured or tear easily. Also the zipper continually snags as there is no zipper guard on it. I feel I am going to be using the Customer Satisfaction Guarantee every few years with this bag.
I believe that current products are nowhere near the quality of their older counterparts. I have a 10yr old North Face Blue Kazoo that only weight a 1/2lb more and is superior in every aspect, even the 600 fill down is better than the newer 800+ bags.
I would only recommend this or any newer bag with lighter material IF you are an REI member and willing to use the satisfaction guarantee.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Phantom +15 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
This is a fantastic bag. It is ridiculously light, packs incredibly small and is very warm. The draft collar and hood are unparalleled.
My only gripe with the bag is the single direction three quarter zipper. On warmer nights I like to be able to unzip the bottom and have a little more leg room or even hang a foot out. I would gladly take another ounce or two for a full length zipper. It definitely kills the flexibility of this bag. I cant comfortably sleep this bag above 40 degrees without overheating because of the short zipper.
Overall I would still buy it over the Marmot Helium for its superior draft collar and hood design.

I've used this sleeping bag in the Sierra's and in Norway spring and fall and have loved it! The bag is very true to temperature if not warmer - I've used it as a 0 degree (without bivisac) because I sleep warm. I'm athletic built and 5'10" and the regular bag fits me perfectly: gives me room to move while not having any "dead space". The bag's super soft fabric combined with the fluffiness of the 800 fill down makes it feel like your basically sleeping inside a stuffed animal.

Carried this from Springer to Damascus on the AT. Lost very few feathers...this thing is a champ. Slept in it many nights BELOW 15* and was always fine. It actually got down to 7* one night and started snowing into the shelter, slept great. Still going strong, it would be hard to convince me there is a better sleeping bag
